D&D 5E Mostly Useless Things in 5E?

I agree Int is the main dump stat, but can be made more useful by giving extra languages, and using illusions from time to time. Or giving out free "clues" with an int check.

I think all armour is more class based than anything, and med armour is useful enough.

As the title says. Various thigns that are mostly uselss in 5E IMHO.

I think you (and everyone else) mean things that are mostly useless to player characters, right?

Because nothing is useless to the DM! :) Even a weapon or armor that's straight inferior to another is useful in the hands of an NPC/monster.

INT is definitely a good dump stat, unfortunately. I wish it was somehow tied to, or influences, the number of skills you are proficient with. Maybe remove the skills assigned via class, and instead let your known skills be the result of your background + INT modifier.

I don't consider it a "big flaw" but I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed that int doesn't seem to give you much in the game... BUT that depends a lot on the table.

As a GM, I fairly regularly asks for int checks to see if a character would figure out something that the player is missing (things that a wizard, or a warrior etc would just know). If their int sucks... far less GM hints for that player.

I used to do that here and there, but ran into the same trouble as with "spot" or "perception" type checks. Often adventures or GM's have plot clues and stuff that end up hinging on finding these clues. If someone makes the check, cool; they feel like their character contributed and was useful. If everyone fails, you can't really stop the adventure and call it a day, so some other means of getting the clue are needed.

Should an otherwise uneducated barbarian be less apt to be able to climb/swim, intimidate, befriend animals, or have sharp senses? Cuz not all skills are book learnin'.

That being said, we have a houserule that, on top of everything as normal, you get your INT mod +1 additional languages. Like Europe (or Star Wars), we think our setting is cool when it commonly has people and cultures mixing and speaking each others languages.
