Yea, I think there is room for growth. It seems to me that the packed PAX South show had a TON of new folks in the audience that haven't yet given D&D a try.

Actual play videos are majorly evangelizing those who would like it, but may not know yet.

This is all wrong. 5e is a bad game and is dying.

That's what I read in another thread, anyway.

Should I be more skeptical?

Honestly, I never really cared much about the "niche" nature of the hobby, a lot of my interests are not shared by most people and it doesn't make much difference. And yet, seeing a D&D book continue to be one of the best selling books in the country is pretty darn cool.

Just went to look what books were in the same ranking, a "1984" paperback is sitting higher, along with 3 newer books which likely wont stay there too long.

They actually went up a bit;
PHB #5 .ca! #51 .com
and the DMG is at #16 in Canada

Really wonder what drives these little ups and downs.

PHB has 1871 reviews @.com, 285 @.ca

Which is great news, as I would definitely be happy if it becomes the blueprint for future monster-themed sourcebooks. They really hit a nice sweet spot between crunch and lore in its design.

Somebody recently asked mearls about whether we might see a book like 2E Faiths & Avatars in the style of Volos, and he said that was something he is considering long-term: I think Volos is a model they will follow in the future. I have my fingers crossed for Eliminster's Tour of the Planes, or something like that...

Slower release schedule means you can buy every book released.

With monthly books in 3E I missed a few and bought around 80 of them.

Our group has everything except SKT plus Tome of Beasts.
Personally have everything up to OotA.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see "(Character's name here)'s Guide to the Planes" in the relatively recent future - there are a huge number of planar hooks in the core three rulebooks, and as we have been told, much of what they have planned to do has been seeded in them...

I think so. It is really strange. Just when I think the momentum is done or beginning to slow down I run into a whole new group of lapsed or brand new players chomping at the bit.

I see this too. People keep dribbling back into the game and sometimes bring new people.
Or you go to a wedding and see some friends who say
'Dude, my kid is 10 and looking at my books. I'm gonna DM for him and his friends'

A whole new crop of converts to our dark faith!!

Edit: I myself am one of the 'dribble backs'. Brought a group of 4 people back too, plus added a couple to the ranks of RPGing in general thanks to FF SWRPG.

I'm not sure why this is supposed to be meaningful. Buy what you think is useful or will enjoy. Are there really that many people who buy everything?

The downside to me of lots of product like in 2e is that I have a harder time evaluating whether a product would be useful or interesting, not that I can't purchase it. The same problem exists with the flood of product on DMs Guild.

The only gaming system I almost bought everything for was WEG Star Wars. I found it interesting enough to keep buying new products. The products had good production values and great art (from the LucasFilm archives), at least until the final few years when the trade dress changed from product to product and quality plummeted. None of my friends were buying it after the first few products (important as in High School, for example, we got a complete set of 1e AD&D books by having one person buy a book outside the core three. My purchase was the Wilderness Survival Guide).
