D&D 5E do you still roll for damage?

I always roll damage.

Always will.

Static damage is desperately dull.

I roll monster hitpoints too.

I wish the Monster Manual was printed on white paper so I could go through it with Tipp-Ex and blank out all those infernal averages. They bother me.

There is much heresy in this thread.

The Dice Gods are displeased.

There will be a cleansing, purification by flame.

Always roll your dice. Do it in front of your players too, so they can sit on the edge of their seat, foreheads beading with sweat in the knowledge that with every bounce of them bones... they live or die by the will of the mighty Dice Gods.

Seriously though, I just find it more fun to roll and so do my players. If folks are having fun with averages though the more power to them... until they're cleaned by fire...

I hate, hate, hate, hate DM's who use the static damage. It makes combat lifeless and boring. I want to get hit for 2 points one round and 30 the next. Never knowing for sure what's coming is part of the excitement and fun of D&D.

At very low levels it's more like 1 point one round and 5 points the next. I've been DMing inexperienced players and thought it best to let them get their bearings first before adding too much drama. For a more experienced group, I would roll for all damage regardless of character level.

Funny aside:

I asked a fellow DM at work, "Do you roll for damage?"

Apparently it was out of context because his reply was, "At my age, rolling always does damage."

I roll for enemy damage unless it's a full-on horde battle. 8 or more enemies, I'll use the average to make the battle go quicker, though even then I'll still roll damage for the enemy commander(s).

I only roll damage for boss monsters. It's one of the ways the PCs know they are facing a boss monster.

For mooks, I take the average. On a crit, I roll the damage dice and add it to the static damage.
