D&D 5E [5e] QL's Al-Qadim Game

No worries Quickleaf , life gets in the way sometimes - in fact I was so busy today I wouldn't have had time to read it until this evening anyway ha!

Any comments on the local dervishes and how they would approach or be perceived by the Sheikh?

Well, it's interesting because the word "dervish" is scarcely referenced in the Al-Qadim books.

If you look at the Backgrounds document under Outlander, you'll find a list of tribes in the setting (pages 2 & 3).

The tribe I'm thinking is the best fit for a human PC is House Nasr (People of the Eagle): A tribe of warriors and protectors of the desert wastes, they watch over the Desert Mosque. Tribespeople with the Outlander background replace Athletics with Animal Handling. Begin with a riding horse.

There are also some mystic groups referenced in the Al-Qadim books. One of these might catch your eye instead of, or in addition to, a desert tribe.

One day, about a decade ago, a sudden storm blew a fishing boat off the coast of Qudra far out to sea. After spending most of the night fighting the elements, the three fishermen found themselves on a bright morning with a brisk wind and a mostly intact boat. Thanking the gods for their mercy, they set sail for home.

A short while later, they saw over a wave a strange sight: a red-dressed figure, walking on the water, waiving at them. Two of the fishermen thought that it was a mirage at best, and an evil genie at worst and wanted to avoid the apparition. However, the older fisherman said that clearly Fate had brought them here to encounter this figure and that they should see it through. The fishermen changed course to intercept what turned out to be a stout bearded man in red robes and an old fur cloak, carrying an axe. With a broad smile, the man asked for a lift to the coast and stepped on board.

Thus did the wanderer Lal Qualandar, of the Purple Lands, arrive in Zakhara.

After spending some time in Qudra, Lal took to the road again, traveling the lands of Zakhara wide and far (although, some noted, sticking to land travel). Visiting cities and villages, talking to priests, mystics and children; lecturing camels about the nature of Truth, Fate and the Universe; he sometimes was asked what he was searching for. He simply stated that he would know once he saw it. To travelers and caravan drivers, his presence on the road was always welcome – not only were his fireside stories entertaining, he gained a reputation as a fierce warrior, ducking and weaving into the fray, fearlessly confronting brigands - or worse.

Lal grew to love these lands, the sand, the climate (it’s a dry heat!) and its beliefs. Yet recently he felt disquiet… why had Fate brought him here? So when he heard a rumor that the Sheikh was investigating the disappearances of caravans in the High Desert, Lal knew what he had to do....

To expand on the logic behind my post and Lal's approach to the court; after reading the above, it doesn't seem like the various mystic groups would have the ear of the Sheikh in any meaningful fashion. Furthermore, they are too fractious and "our way is the right way!"-ish for Lal to join them, although I can see in his travels having discussions with several members of those various groups, but moving on before committing fully. In a way, Lal is the leader and sole member of his group of mystics... he doesn't have the charisma, or interest, to form his own cult.

So Lal will instead rely on his not insignificant reputation, "charm", and considerable self-confidence to convince the Sheikh - or the group - that his assistance would be most beneficial :) It's also possible that some caravan leaders, pilgrims and lesser merchants would sponsor him as a champion to protect the roads. He doesn't charge much, after all ;)

In *completely* different news, I see on the original post that some cash is available for party equipment. I would need a few hundred GP to round out my equipment (nothing extravagant!) would this be ok? (not 100% sure how the pool "works")

Are we rolling HP or taking average?

Matthan: I think that with your background, it's quite likely that our characters have crossed paths a few times over the last 10 years, and probably have a healthy respect for each other's prowess.

As far as taking guardian... you are right that they synergize well together, but a guardian does well with any other melee combatant at its side, and well the high level barbarian stuff was too good to pass up. Furthermore, dervish energizes with champion better anyway so even if I had multi-classed... My ability scores are not as good as yours and my character design is different, so it looks like you'll definitely be the main damage dealer while I'll be more resilient.

edit: also, where did you see the armor causing exhaustion in the heat rules?

Quickleaf mentioned that he has some rules for them when he PM'd the playtest docs. I don't think they've been laid out. I'm mostly just future proofing (and trying to stay in genre) since I know the rules exist. If the rules are mild or able to be mitigated, I can revisit the armor situation in game. If the rules interact with the exhaustion rules, I'll just stay as far away from armor as I can.

As for our characters knowing each other, I should be good with that. The last few days have been crazy for me so I'm trying to catch up on the thread (you mentioned me so I read you first). Hopefully either today or tomorrow, I can be done with everything on my end. My apologies to the group for the delay.

Ancalagon Your sheet looks fine, but in his present form I am concerned about allowing Lal Qalander in the game. Let me explain...

He has no connections to the Al-Qadim setting. You've described him as belonging to no mystic group. You haven't mentioned an Al-Qadim tribe. I am unclear on his motives to be involved beyond "raiders are bad." He has no connections to other PCs.

Even the most interesting stuff in his background about overthrowing a dwarf lord all happened back in Yoon-Suin.

I'd like to see some more connections to the setting and the story before giving the OK on Lal.
