D&D 5E Build an anti-stereotypical team of 4.

This unlikely party covers all the main bases, just not in the usual manner. Surprisingly effective, I think.

Front Line
Hill Dwarf Moon Druid, tank/divine. Wild Shape into a dinosaur from Volo's, and multiclass 1 monk level for Wis-based Unarmored Defense. Shillelagh if you have no wild shape left.
Stout Halfling Battlemaster, damage. Use a hand crossbow w/ Archery fighting style, Crossbow Expert feat, and Sharpshooter feat.

Back Line
Air Genasi Thief, skills/support. Use a healers kit (w/ Fast Hands feature, Healer feat) for healing.
Tabaxi Tome Warlock, support/rituals/arcane. Use the Inspiring Leader feat for temp hp.



Runners Up, if Unearthed Arcana is allowed.
Hobgoblin Gunsmith Artificer
Deep Gnome Mystic

Fighter-> Necromancer. Because getting stabbed is for dead people.
Rogue-> Barbarian with an axe can open any door or bypass any trap.
Wizard-> Monk. Because Ki is a kind of magic, Right?
Cleric-> Purple Dragon Knight. Because they really wanted to play a Warlord.

Optimizing for maximum damage is stupid, because the better your party is at killing, the harder enemies they face.

Optimizing for versatility increases options, survival and actually makes average encounters a bit easier.

I realize you are talking about class, but I think it's worth noting that the racial makeup of one of my campaigns is Air Genasi, Lizardfolk, Warforged, Firbolg, and Dragonborn.

For a party, I like,

Bladelock or Bladesinger as the Fighter
Light Cleric as the Blaster
Lore Bard as the Healer
Shadow Monk as the Rogue
and for kicks throw in a Rapier and Shield carrying Dex Barb that would probably be nearly impossible to kill

War Cleric as the Paladin/Fighter
Tempest Cleric as the Tank
Life Cleric as the Cleric
Nature Cleric as the Rogue/Ranger
Knowledge Cleric as the Bard/Rogue
Light Cleric as the Blaster



haha I would like to see a party of Clerics about as much as would like to see a party of Bards. Of course for a party of Bards, you'd have to mix it up better by having a different college for each.

Hobgoblin wizard, kicked out by his people for being a nerd.
Kobold barbarian, finally taken as much crap as she can handle and now it's payback.
Orc druid, who adopted by forest gnomes and now quests to find ever more potent fungal brews.

1. mountain dwarf is the best race for a wizard. 1 feat and he skulks around in a plate mail and with a battle axe and a large shield.
2p to int is irrelevant.
