Recently WotC has put on their website an opening for a Game Designer, as pointed out by Morrus earlier in the week.

And I am sure many people have applied. Many good, qualified people. And of course, many non-qualified people.

Now, I am all for all types of people working in all types of fields, it doesn't matter to me. As long as you're right for the job, and can do a good job, I don't care who you are.

But then there is this retweet,
Sexist Racism.png

Now, I don't mind what she said, she can say whatever she wants on her twitter account. But, Wizards of the Coast, a public company retweeted it.

To me, that means if you're a man, don't apply because we already made up we're going to choose a woman (it literally doesn't say that, but it feels that way).

Now, do you feel they retweeted it because of:
  1. Guilt?
  2. To retweet a positive message of inclusion/positive reinforcement?

Let me know in the comments how you feel about this retweet.

Did you apply? Do you care if somebody gets hired over you because of gender?

Yes, it means exactly that, no men allowed.

God people like you are whiny.

It doesn't make me feel that way at all.

All she is saying is compete. To take the risk of rejection and encouraging people to apply despite that risk. All WOTC is saying by re-tweeting it is they agree qualified women and people of color should apply and compete for the job, and undertake that risk of applying. They want qualified people to know about the position and apply for it. All qualified people. Even those who, for various reasons, traditionally are put off by the risk of applying and possibly facing rejection for a position like this in an industry like this.

I don't think their re-tweeting of it implies anything about who they plan to hire, beyond wanting to hire a qualified person, and wanting a big pool of qualified people to choose from.

I think they are supporting the idea of inclusion, and to encourage women and other minorities to apply for a job they otherwise would not because historically this industry is a white good ol boys club, which historically has resulted in qualified minorities not applying.

I don't think there is wrong with anything the lady said(other than the risk part.....there is zero risk to applying for this job), it's the fact that the seem to show bias in who they are hiring....this is retweeted in reference to their job posting...if you haven't seen the huge job thread.

White men just can't catch a break in this country. :-S

I suspect (but don't know) that the social media person retweeted it because the company would like the applicant pool to be as large and diverse as possible, and because retweeting a message that supports that objective is how you use social media.

I have seen that other thread, and I don’t think this shows bias on WotCs part at all. We know minorities and women are underrepresented in this industry, and all they are doing by retweeting is to say they support women and minorities to apply when they otherwise wouldn’t because they’d think they wouldn’t have a chance anyway because white men keep getting all the jobs. Just look at the OP. He was implying that he shouldn’t even bother to apply because this means he doesn’t have a chance. Well, that’s how women and minorities have been feeling the whole time.
