D&D 5E Players: Why Do You Want to Roll a d20?

Lots of things. Point to something in your background that might give you the info. Point to a skill you have that might give you the info. Point to something that has happened in game play that might give you the info.
Even something as simple as where you're from might do it.

ROTFLMAO.

So, I can point to a relevant skill on my character sheet, but, I can't ask for a roll on that skill?

It’s gonna depend on your DM. In Maxperson’s game, you might be able to just say, “I’m trained in Nature, do I know anything about X?” That’s not necessarily reflective of every game run with goal and approach style action resolution, but it’s certainly a way some DMs might choose to handle it.

LOL. I've been told REPEATEDLY that I am not allowed to do exactly what @Maxperson is saying I should do in order to play in this style. And, now, apparently, it's perfectly acceptable to point to my character sheet, but, verboten to actually speak it out loud.

And you guys wonder why we seem so confused and bemused by what you're selling.

It has been repeatedly stated that unless the player states a specific approach, there is no way the player can do something. But, now, I can just point to my character sheet and ask, "What do I know?" Which is it? Do I have to state an approach or not?

You... you realize we're not all the same person, right?

Just because @iserith and I are similar in this, does not make us the same.

Or, use what is on your character sheet in the approach.

Player: "I grew up on the edge of the troll moors where we used fires to ward off the trolls at night. They can't abide flame."

DM: "Sounds good. No roll. You know trolls are vulnerable to fire."

Or "I draw upon my historical knowledge of the Troll Moors, learned in the greatest libraries in the world, to try to recall the weaknesses of trolls."

Now we have an action to adjudicate into success, failure, or an ability check.

But, you are so quick to correct my misunderstandings. I'm rather baffled why this gets left on the table.

Or "I draw upon my historical knowledge of the Troll Moors, learned in the greatest libraries in the world, to try to recall the weaknesses of trolls."

Now we have an action to adjudicate into success, failure, or an ability check.

SERIOUSLY?!?!?!

"I make a History Check" is off limits, but this is fine? Good grief.

This is why this discussion is so frustrating. It's like punching smoke. If "I make a history check" is not an action", then how the heck is THIS an action? And you wonder why the criticism of magic wording gets trotted out so often. "Oh, Mr. DM, I didn't actually SAY history check, so, I guess it's ok?"

Yeah. This is just going around in circles. You've created this mythical play style that actually isn't anything new or original, just wrapped it up in some flowery language in the pretense that it is something different. Complete and utter smoke and mirrors trying to dress up "role playing".

((Clicks unfollow on the thread to more easily ignore it))
