Are you?

Paladin has a long, storied history in the game. It's a sacred cow. Divine Warrior is a neologism with no meaning. It also means that Devotion Oath Divine Warriors are seen as the "true" class, while everyone else is just ... something else.

I agree. Clerics are divine warriors, paladins are something different. A paladin's power comes from their conviction, not the gods. Even the dictionary defines a paladin as "any determined advocate or defender of a noble cause. "

Easy way to fix the paladin issue is rename the class to something like divine warrior and have the 'paladin' as Oath of Devotion. That way you can still make your savage warrior and those who see paladin as a specific thing would probably be fine.

This is exactly what Pathfinde 2E has done. The class is Champion, one of the options is Paladin. I think it's a nice and fresh take and retains some of the sacred cow while making room for new ideas in the same space.

Well, everyone that agrees with you is happy, of course. The rest of us who don't mind seeing paladin being the base class are obviously being thrown under the bus, but, hey, that's okay so long as you're happy, right?

I mean, I'm not allowed to play a paladin, unless it conforms to a single concept of paladin. I'm allowed to play a "divine warrior", gee thanks. My way, they're ALL paladins and everyone gets to play one.

Why do you get to tell everyone else what a class means?

Curious, why the do need for this class to called paladin?

Can't speak for @Hussar, but why not? It's tradition. It's kind of asking why we need to call a rose a rose.

Even with the changes in 5E, it's still a warrior that is dedicated to an ideal if not necessarily a deity.

If you call a carnation a rose does it make it a rose? Tradition, the D&D paladin is one thing. 5e has 'watered down' what the D&D paladin is to some people.

At least thats the way I see it. Holy/Divine/Religious Champion or whatever seem best would have been just a good for the class name. Had WotC started I think maybe there wouldnt have been an issue.

While "champion" is not a bad term, but it's already used as a fighter subclass. I suppose you could have "Devout Warrior" but that also implies a divine connection. If you want a class that is not necessarily tied to any external power, there has to be some generic name.

My Oath of the Ancient [Brewmasters] paladin was not particularly devout except that he wanted to spread the joy of partying and good dwarven ale. While it was a somewhat simple concept for AL (I try to make simple hooks for AL characters) it was still fun.

If I was to do another Oath of the Ancients paladin I'd probably go more of a fey source of power. Maybe do a gnomish paladin who was the life of the party. Probably dual wield rapiers, because nothing says "fun-loving" than a gnome dual wielding rapiers.
