D&D 5E Are you sick of the Swordcoast?

Are you sick of the Swordcoast

Jacob Lewis

Ye Olde GM
My Forgotten Realms is a hodgepodge of source material and personal preferences derived from my collection of 3e campaign sourcebooks, Dungeon adventures and Dragon articles, the original and excellent Volo's Guides, and a smidge from 4e, most notably the Neverwinter campaign book, and a few articles from the online magazines, especially the updated Moonshaes and Mike Schley's excellent maps.

Also worth noting, the incredible Tomb of Annihilation spawned a plethora of 3rd party source material and adventure ideas to keep multiple campaigns going through Chult without directly involving the adventure itself.

So why should anyone feel like they're stuck on the Sword Coast just because the company hasn't published anything specific or updated? If you like the setting at all, then trust me, there is still plenty of legacy information and material out there to use in your current campaigns. Conversion is not a science. It's a magic trick and an illusion. Find your own Realms, or make it your own! ;)

I want an updated Greyhawk. I want new maps. I want to see where are Dragonborn coming from in Greyhawk. I want to see what happens in the South Province. Did Furyondy removed Iuz? Did the Horned Society made a return?

Here is an update:

The scarlet brotherhood now rules all of Oerth after Iuz has been defeated, and they genocided all abberations like e.g. Dragonborn.

Maps have been outlawed by them, except those which show the scarlet empire, which is easy to create, just take any old Oerth worldmap and remove all borders :devilish:

They are now quite close to the unified masterbreed the superhumanoid which will replace all other humanoid races. It will be blonde or so, and get +2 to all attributes, so no player is at disadvantage anymore no matter what class he wants to play since it is the optimized race for every class.

For those who do not get it easily, my reply is clearly intended to be satire, any similarities to real world stuff might be pure coincidence ...

As I said In the new book thread- As a curiosity I'd like to see how they would tackle the Dales, but I don't need it or want it. I'm good for FR with my OGB, and a couple of choice product picks from 2E, and Ed's 4E book.

I really, really wish they would just do something new- I don't mean Eberron or M:TG. I don't mean new to WOTC , like Spelljammer, or Birthright. I mean something completely new. Or another setting search contest would be awesome- outside thinking unrelated to live streams and their current business model of riding a sterilized nostalgia train.

I'm with you- I don't want WOTC to touch GH-I'd be curious to see maybe a DMs Guild thing on Mearls' GH (maybe for a charity)- but otherwise please let Gary RIP.

A little, yes.
I have a huge preference for Icewind Dale, which I can play easily with the gazetteer from LotCS and SKT but....

My next favorite thing is Thay/Rashemen and it makes me sad to see that the Red Wizard are now more active in the Sword Coast than in their own country, it would seem.

And adventures in the Shining South! I need stuff for the Shining South.

But in the end it pushed me to look for other setting, and I discovered that I absolutely love Eberron, despite my initial reaction. And I use Ravnica as a stand-in for Sharn.

Nope. Because I am unconcerned whether anything in any campaign setting is "updated" or not. "Canon" is completely unnecessary because once you start your game, WotC's "canon" of the world goes out the window.

If I want to play a game in Greyhawk... I'll go onto DMs Guild and buy any previous Greyhawk setting material I want to use and then run a game in Greyhawk. But I have absolutely no need to start at the "most recent" version of the setting and go from there. Any time and location in Greyhawk will be fine. Likewise, if I want to run a Realms game in Turmish, I have quite a number of books and wikis that have info on Turmish from countless years of Realmslore, and will just pick a time and theme in Turmish to set my game.

If people are deliberately holding themselves back from running a Realms game in some corner of the Realms because they don't have the "most recent" info on it (information that would essentially be just some writer at the WotC building making up some random crap and typing it into a computer)... and instead are running in the Sword Coast not because they want to but only because that's where WotC has chosen to give them the "up to date" information... then I think they are cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

No. I play in enough other games that revisiting the sword coast is still fun and nostalgic for me.

Though I'm always up for more of everything.

I would like to see a book on the Dalelands/Moonsea/Cormyr/Sembia. Nothing in depth just an overview of the post sundering events.
Also a Greyhawk book would be cool, but only if they stay true to the setting and not make it Forgotten Realms clone.

FR is fantasy genericland. So wether it’s in the Sword Coast or the Vale of whatever it doesn’t matter to me. I use what’s there for my campaign.
