WotC World Reveal of Baldur's Gate 3

At PAX East today, gameplay footage of Baldur's Gate 3 was revealed for the first time by Larian Studios.

According to PC Gamer, the Early Access version of the game will launch this year with five characters:

• Wyll, Human Warlock
• Shadowheart, Half-elf Cleric
• Lae'zel, Githyanki Fighter
• Gale, Human Wizard
• Astarion, Elven Vampire Spawn Rogue

And you'll be able to create characters using these six classes:

• Fighter (Battle Master, Eldritch Knight)
• Wizard (Evocation, Abjuration)
• Rogue (Arcane Trickster, Thief)
• Ranger (Hunter, Beast Master)
• Cleric (Life, Light, Trickery)
• Warlock (Fiend, Great One)

15 races include (amongst others):

• Elves
• Dwarves
• Humans
• Githyanki
• Drow
• Tieflings
• Vampire Spawn

Bear in mind that this is the company that let you play fire-breathing lizards in their last game. They're not going to shy away from doing dragonborn.

Oh great, yet more evidence that BG3 is just a sad clone of Divinity!

Vampire Spawn wasn't actually a race, he was listed as an Elf.

So there are 6 left; definitely expect the remaining PHB races, so Gnomes, Dragonborn and Half-Orcs. With Githyanki on board, Githzerai make sense too. The last two are probably Genasi, Goliath, or Goblins.

Pretty sure that means number of races plus number of subraces = 15 total.

So elf, high elf, and wood elf would be 3/15 right there.

I bet it has the 9 races you listed first, and 6 subraces associated with them. Like, two elf subraces, two dwarf, and two halfling.

No I think they either count race for races without subraces or subraces for the races that have subraces.

So the 15 for example would be

9. Mountain Dwarf,
10. Lightfoot Halfling,

Just a possible example.

Don't forget that Tieflings are the Tome of Foes version with Archedevil subraces so its most likely they have at least two subraces ready for it, which throws out your math.

The rest are subraces, so obviously all the PHB subraces are in, but also 3 none PHB subraces from Elf, Halfling, and Tiefling (MTOF version of Tiefling). Dwarf do have Duergar, but given Drow and Half Drow and Githyanki are treated as races instead of subraces (likely because they have a massive reputation for evil that the rest of the origin race does not share), Duergar are likely going to be a seperate race, instead of a subrace in BG3.

They seem to be counting “half-drow” as its own race for whatever reason. I assume it has game or story mechanics that are significantly different than a standard half-elf (much like “drow” is not being treated as a sub-race of “elf”. “Vampire spawn” is not a race - that character is an elf.

I think they’re getting to 15 “races and subraces” by counting like this:

Tieflings will have subraces from the video - there was a dropdown, and the default choice was Asmodean Tiefling. And they also specifically stated that we didn't see all the races available at launch and that they will be adding more before that point. The math is hard enough right now to confine all the subraces to just 15, and all that will make it even harder to do so.
