D&D 5E Mythic Odysseys of Theros is the #1 D&D New Release

Well, it new, innit? In other news Gone with The Wind isn't #1 at the box office right now.

True, it's not a surprise that Theros is leading new releases, but that it jumped two spots on the D&D best seller list is different. Isn't that based on total sales of a book?

If I'm right it means Theros' sales have already out paced Ravnica and Saltmarsh's sales before it's been released. Of course Wildemount blew past everything basically but the core and starter set.

It's in the 3000s. Not sure this is meaningful. Comparing it to another book right now isn't really a comparison of anything. I think Ravnica was in the top 300 of all books sold on Amazon when it was released?

Well, that was fun

New stuff always outsells old stuff.

That‘s why companies make new stuff! Otherwise they’d just sell their old stuff.

I'm not sure if it being 16 is that good... Curse of Strahd outselling it seems pretty odd.

But it is early, I don't think these numbers mean much right now.

The rankings are based on current sales with a little bit of history (like the past 2 weeks or something). It is not all time sales. For example, when Wildemount came out it was #1 for a bit (in D&D). That didn't mean it had suddenly outsold the 5 year run of the PHB, it just sold more books in the past 2 weeks give or take.

D&D is dominating the Puzzles & Games Reference category in Books. That's a bit more relevant to how D&D is doing. The Core Three are 1,2,3 with the starter set at 4. Volo's is 6. SCAG is 9. A D&D inspired book is 11 and character sheets are 12.
Cthulu and Zweihander make the top 50.

But none of the other D&D books are in the top 100.

At this point, SCAG and Volo's might be selling so well, for so long, that they could be considered part of a Core Five.

Nothing D&D is in the top 100 for all of sci-fi/fantasy, the broad category a few stages up from D&D specific. Even in the Gaming category, Theros is only 3rd. Also, the "Gaming" category is part of fiction, whereas Puzzles & Games References is not. They are related, but different

Interesting that Volo's is rolling large, but Mordenkainen is more than 40 slots below. I mean, it is more recent, but I suspect the content has to factor in - it's got a lot of classic stuff, but it hasn't got the ultra-core D&D monsters Volo's has. Somehow Volo's feels a little fresher too, despite being older.

Not surprised re: Xanathars, I bet the vast majority of people who were excited about that bought it on Beyond or Roll20 or a similar platform.

Totally astonished that Zweihander is doing so well. I've literally never met anyone who has played it. Must be the darn kids! < goes out to ensure no-one is on his lawn >

(Also reading about Zweihander, I didn't realize it was basically a Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay-type deal in much the way OSR games are loosely based on D&D.)

If you go to best selling gaming MTOF is beating the SCAG, if you go to best selling Dungeons and Dragons the SCAG is beating MTOFs wtf?

I will say at least in some ways the SCAG is better written then the MTOF, but MTOF does have is bright shining moments, such as the unification of Demihuman Pamtheons and some of the Monsters and of course the Gith.

Anyways the point of this thread was that some where saying D&D had peaked, but the fact that Theros is doing so well before it was even released says otherwise.

I'll add that given the Corona situation, alot of folks that would have purchased just the physical book have purchased the digital versions instead (or as well), boosting digital Theros sales, but at the expense of lowering sales on Amazon, so it might have been even higher on the lists otherwise.
