Hi, I'm a Mindflayer, but don't let that worry you
The real question is, what setting will they use? Greyhawk? Dragonlance? Forgotten Realms? Generic Fantasy Setting invented for the movie?

If the movie is good, then the setting could see a big boost in popularity.

Hero
13th warrior is the best D&D movie.
The session zero..
DM: “ok guys, it’s gonna be a Norse themed one shot about a bunch of Vikings who come home to an unexpected danger”

The Team, except for Bill: “I’ll make a fighter!” “Me too but with a different set of weapons” “I’ll make a ranger!” “Battle master!” “Rogue!”

Bill: “I’m gonna make a Persian bard”

DM: “...um... er.... OK! Let’s do this!

Legend
We could spend days listing movies better than the D&D movie (Dragonslayer, Hobbit - Rankin Bass version, Conan, etc.). But the big problem is that no one at Hollywood cares enough about the property to do a heart-felt, non-money grab version. There's no one with foresight to lead and follow this project through.
