D&D 5E Tired of doing WotC's job

The one good thing with playing a D&D-type game is, if you don't enjoy it, there are a whole bunch of other D&D-type games, and you probably will like one of them!

I heartily recommend Dungeon World, by the way, as a break from D&D.
I love Dungeon World, but have not had nearly enough opportunities to play it.

My favorite RPG is The One Ring, although I freely admit it’s not for everyone.

Given the OPs complaints, though, I don’t think either of these systems are the answer.

Where does it end? I would just say that cloaks have been subsumed into other gear in 5E, in particular traveler's gear. That doesn't mean you can't have a cloak. It's just such a miscellaneous thing that it doesn't matter. Just like we don't have a half dozen or more types of polearms. There are always going to be compromises on what belongs in the book and what doesn't.

For you it's a cloak, for someone else it's exotic cheeses or details on all the equipment needed for setting up a bakery. In Aurora's they tried that. Take a look at just the clothing list
Underclothes
Bustles • Fullcloth • Hosiery • Hose supporters • Loincloth • Lounging robes • Nightshirts • Money belt • Stockings
Overclothes
Breeches • Cannons • Chemise • Codpiece • Cote • Doublet • Dress • Girdle
Outerclothes
Belts • Capes • Caps and hats • Cloaks • Gloves and mittens • Hoods • Jerkins • Purses • Robes • Sashes • Scarves and mufflers • Surcoats • Suspenders • Tabards • Togas
Footwear
Baby shoes • Dancing shoes • Dwarf boots • Elf shoes • High boots • Hip boots • Low boots • Moccasins • Orc-spiker boots • Riding boot • Sandals • Slippers • Snowshoes (clothing) • Tabi
I mean, I really need to know what a Cote is and how much it costs. :p Of course you could probably get a PDF version of Aurora's and just use it with some minor tweaking here and there.

No game can cover every option. Then again no game is for everyone. Good luck!

P.S. I'm not arguing with you or trying to persuade you one way or another. It's just ... interesting reason.

P.P.S. Has any edition ever discussed how you detect lycanthropy in detail?
Well, we've had our opposing views in the past, but I like to think I know you well enough to understand you are not argumentative, etc. :)

1E goes into more details in general and has a full page plus of text on it. While hardly exhaustive, it is more and that is what is missing in 5E. That's fine for some people, I've just realized not for me.

Your posts have always been thoughtful and enjoyable; I hope you continue to post even if you move on to other systems.
Thanks. I try to post in a manner others will enjoy and promote discussion about DND. I'm sure I'll be around now and then, but given the nature of many threads and my decreased desire to continue tweaking a game because I don't feel it should be my job... I doubt I'll post much (at least about 5E).

I can't recall those questions having been answered in any edition of D&D. Certainly not in the core three books (as far as I can recall).
The AD&D DMG has a very extensive discussion of lycanthropy and how to cure it.

“ For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.” I’d say a lycanthrope counts as “a creature that bears magic.”
In AD&D Detect Shapechanger is a different spell from Detect Magic, and higher level. And a sword that gets bonuses against magic-using and enchanted creatures is different from a sword that gets bonuses against lycanthropes and shape-changers. So my own view would be that Detect Magic does not detect lycanthropes.

Question? Why not just use the equipment cost form whatever D&D source you find most complete? That is the great thing about D&D to me, you can pretty much grab from any edition and plug it into whichever edition you are playing. I feel 1e/2e & 5e are the best at that, but you can do it in any edition.

Someone already pointed out that there are costs and weights for different types of clothing in the books (PHB pg 150) which does what your asking for in this statement.

However, having seen many of your posts, I don't think it was one specific thing. I do find it interesting what you think is missing though. They seem like frivolous things to me, but we all have our own expectations and desires. Personally, I find 5e to require the fewest house rules of any D&D I have played yet. We had up to 20 pages in 1e, 2+ pages in 4e, and about 1 page in 5e.

My house rules have been the opposite. Maybe 4 pages for 1E/2E, about 10 for 3E and SW d20, and now close to 30 for 5E.

And yes, I can use old sources, but I shouldn't have to IMO. There is not a single rule for lycanthropy in the PHB or DMG for 5E that I have found anyway.

In addition to 1E and 2E, I do think there are some other retro-clones that might fit your desire for recognizable mechanics with more detailed world-building information. Castles and Crusades comes to mind, as does Astonishing Sorcerers and Swordsmen of Hyperborea.

I will say, that as you do seem to have more of a "tinkerer" mindset, the proud nails of any system are probably going to stand out and bother you a bit more than most folk. Not much you can do about that, unfortunately.

Very interesting, Of course if your 30 pages of house rules includes things like the cost of a cloak, which I would never consider a house rule, then I get it.

And yes, I can use old sources, but I shouldn't have to IMO.
But if you go back and play 2e, your are using your old stuff? I mean, if you already bought the books? Sorry, I just don't get it; however, the most important thing is to enjoy it. IF you are not enjoying 5e, don't do it. It is not worth it. If it helps you to vent on these forums, go for it.
