D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Moves Forward With Deal With Former Marvel Exec Jeremy Latcham

Yeah, this would 100% be a problem. Drow would be hard to put in a movie without raising questions of racism.

And questions of "so they're elves, but they live underground? And they all dress in bondage gear? And they worship some kind of big spider who's also an elf and a goddess? Or is she supposed to be some kind of a demon or something?"

No, but the black community will be sensitive to black-skinned antagonists portrayed as monsters in a movie, especially when the actors will either have to wear paint or suits making their skin black, or have CGI to make them look black.

I get that. What I'm saying is that even ignoring that they still have a boatload of other issues. Their whole concept is b-movie-esque nonsense, regardless of their skin color, and any movie that features them is going to turn out as a b-movie

While I am not a fan of them trying to put Drow in a movie, why can't they just use actual Black actors for the parts of the Drow? Or change them from being ebon-skinned to having ebon-colored hair, with skin color not mattering. Or change them from being born evil, to it being a curse, that just happens to need to be broken as part of the movie plot.

Because people of african and pacific island descent don't have skin the same color as drow. Drow skin is actually black, not a dark, dark brown (I know, there's a range of skin colors). Also, I don't think it would be any better to have all black people in the movie be evil or drow. The thing about the curse is already kind of part of the lore of FR, they were "cursed" to be the way they were by the other elves.

It's going to be OK. Thor: Dark World survived those criticisms just fine:

I mean, I know that drow aren't just white guys in blackface but I don't think the visual would be a good thing.
Evil drow don't have to be included. That being said, most paintings depict the drow with purple & gray skin, which is probably what we would get. The makeup department would create a look that is distinctly non-human, which makes sense considering that no ethnic group looks like drow anyway. There would probably be some alternations (such as minor prosthetics we see for Star Trek aliens) to make it clear they aren't human and make them unique. Problem solved!
