It’s like when talking about optimization, and we pretty much all agree that if a build comes together at level 12 it’s not a good build. Even in a 1-20 campaign, that’s half the campaign. Spending half the campaign in a state one finds undesirable is a significant thing, much less, 90% of the campaign.
I agree. A "build" should more or less be online by level 6-8, preferably sooner. Otherwise, you are waiting too long before you can actually enjoy how the concept plays IMO.

Yep. Which is why, while I like racial ASIs, I get why folks who don’t aren’t convinced or at all moved by “but your halfling Barbarian will have 20 strength eventually”.

(oops forgot an abandoned post was there)

For one, they’re not like cases.
A portion of the community makes halflings in strength builds. Many folks would like to do so more but don’t like being behind others of the same build. That’s all that matters wrt to strength halflings.

OTOH, levels reached in most campaigns matters to the specific argument I brought it up for, because I was stating that it’s an unfair counter argument to say “the halfling will hit 20 strength anyway, so there is no real difference”.

You have either forgotten, or ignored in the first place, that my argument was that most players, if they get 3 ASIs, won’t do so until the very end of their campaign. Ie, most of their career/campaign is spent behind the Orc Barbarian in strength.

According to JC, a majority of players don’t use feats.

Probably just my point of view, but I have a hard time believing that. I've played with many, many players over the years, at home tables and con games, and the only ones who didn't use feats were playing editions that didn't have them.

Any chance of a citation for this?

I believe he could think that, but IME and most others I talk to, that is most definitely not the case, so I am curious as to the source.

Thanks! :)
Wotc has said several times, as does the dndbeyond data. He most recently said it in the video @Parmandur linked in the thread about the new feats UA.

Oh, my experience is definitely of feats being used.

But I will trust JC and D&DB data over my own (and definitely over others’) experience, if we are debating what “most” people do.
