What amazes me is that a few lines of fluff which I think could be interpreted in multiple ways means that everything WOTC publishes is total garbage. I mean, we're talking about Forgotten Realms here, which is not exactly the poster child of realism in the first place.

What about the rest of the mod? It's like trashing a car company because you don't like how they did the glove box light. It's making a mountain out of a molehill.
Some people just have a bone to pick with WotC and will jump on any excuse to call them a naughty word company. It’s not that this particular (IMO very minor) plot abnormality made them hate WotC, it’s that they already hate WotC and this issue is the latest thing they can point to to justify it.

Very minor?

I would hate to see a major issue.

Who said anything about fighting their own players?

I wouldn't trade my guys for anything. Most have been with me for nearly twenty years.

But I wouldn't try to slip something this lame past them.
Having your players argue and carp at every turn while you are trying to run a campaign sounds really enjoyable. Carry on!

Nothing is perfect, WOTC products have flaws like everything else.

It's just one thing to say "I have a problem with this, how do I fix it" and constantly, repeatedly, complaining and asserting that everything they produce is naughty word. I don't like sushi*, but I don't go on sushi lover's web sites and complain about how raw fish is the worst thing in the world.

Have problems? Great. Let's talk about possible solutions, even if we don't all agree with what that solution should be. Still not satisfied? I don't mean to be rude but don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. Personally I love leftse (a Norwegian potato pancake) and my wife thinks it's disgusting (although she is quite fond of kringla so I guess I'll keep her).

Case in point

It's, what a paragraph or so of fluff that maybe should have been ever-so-slightly reworded? Less than 1% of the publication? That's what we've been arguing about for more than 160 posts?

You can't please everyone. No product is perfect. Either accept that, don't ever spend money on a published module or go buy something else. Well, that and I'm hungry for kringla now.

To me it’s very minor because it’s just a background detail. The important thing is that it’s been winter for an unnaturally long time and that’s starting to become a problem. Whether that long time is 6 months or 2 years or 100 years isn’t really important to the central themes or the events of the adventure. If it’s been over a year, it might raise some questions (which is why I would probably change it to a few months if/when I run it), but the adventure is likely to play out pretty much the same either way. So, to me, it’s a minor, niggling thing. A nitpick. Obviously your mileage may vary.

A major issue would be one that directly impacts the structure of the adventure. Like when Storm King’s Thunder tells you to just dick around in the Sword Coast for a while until the players are high enough level to continue the actual adventure. That’s a major issue to me. Or like the weird pacing issues that the randomized nature of the Fortunes of Ravenloft can cause in Curse of Strahd. Things that directly impact the gameplay, rather than background details.

It is a module....you the DM build the world, the module is a set of IKEA Blueprints that serves as the inspiration.

Yes, IKEA Blueprints. 🤦

In a Gygax module you would probably get a random chart to roll percentile dice to determine the weather outcomes. Some results would be way too harsh, one result would be way too generous.

This ad hoc table from the module, invariably would conflict with a table that Gary already had in the 1e DMG, but you know...Gary just wrote the books...he didn't use the books.

Build the world you want.
I think after 50 years the game publishers would have finally learned how to assemble a module that’s runnable and sensible. The fact that almost every one has major issues is a sad testament to how bad at it they are.

Is writing an adventure really that hard? If the pros can’t do it what hope is there for us?
