D&D 5E 3 Of The Adventures in Candlekeep Mysteries

Candlekeep is a 'hub' full of portals to different adventures, each portal being a book, in the upcoming Candlekeep Mysteries adventure anthology for D&D. Here's the names of three of the adventures according to iO9. The adventures are standalone. A ghost dragon lives under the library, and the PCs can interact with her.

The 'codename' for the book was 'Microwave'.
  • The Canopic Being (Jennifer Kretchmer, disability advocate) -- jars of internal organs in Tashlua, a trade city in Tashalar, and a deep 3D dungeon crawl full of elevators and ramps.
  • Zikran’s Zephyrean Tome (Taylor Rehman, game designer) -- a genie in a book in Candlekeep asks you to free it in exchange for a wish. The genie has an evil former master.
  • Kandlekeep Dekonstruktion (Amy Vorpahl, comedian)-- a stolen book contains blueprints of Candlekeep. A comedic adventure. Includes mechanical creatures called Skitterwidgets, which have babies called Kittiewidgets.

Dire Bare

#@$&!

I started buying the alt covers with Volo's guide and it just became a habit. It was easier/cheaper when maybe one book per year had the special cover; I was really hoping this one would just have the standard cover and would save me a buck or six.

Sigh. C'est la vie.
You know . . . you don't have to buy the alternative cover. Don't get cross with WotC.

But you know you want it . . . . look how beeeeutiful it is!!! :)

Eyes of Nine

Everything's Fine
It's unclear to me how a comedic adventure is supposed to actually play? Usually the laughs at the table are from antics the players or my NPCs get up to - not due to puns or funny names or whatever. Hopeful this one won't be cringe, but not holding my breath. That said, maybe it will be funny to read, even if I never play it.

I don't have enough time to play all the adventures I ALREADY own.

I'm not upset at WotC for figuring out that many of us only buy the alt covers and that if they out alt covers on everything we will buy of their stuff. And I do have all the other alt covers they've published already, so it seems silly to stop now.

They do have my number, it's certain.

What intrigues me most about the information here is that Tahsalar is not only definitely not located in the Sword Coast (or anywhere close for that matter), it's also definitely nowhere near on the Realms "A" (or B, or even C) list of places adventures are generally set in. It's actually pretty thoroughly obscure. This makes me wonder if we'll get some other surprising locations for these, not only throughout the Realms, but perhaps even in other settings or out in the planes. After all, when your library-fortress is filled with magical tomes and is frequented by the powerful, arranging transport to distant locations probably won't be too difficult.

Also, if one were to run these as an ongoing campaign, the fact that it stops at level 16 isn't too bad. The game is filled with artifact-level books that would tie into the theme and would make for good launching points for high-level adventures. What if a copy of the Demonomicon of Iggwilv or the Book of Vile Darkness were suddenly uncovered in the stacks?

I'm hoping it will be more of a light-hearted adventure with an upbeat tone and quirky names, rather than an adventure desperately trying to get a few laughs.
