The article doesn’t say anything more, unfortunately, other than describing what D&D is — “Affectionately referred to by fans as D&D, the game is known for its wars, treasure hunts, campaigns, camaraderie, and reversals of fortune, all in a setting that combines humans, elves, orcs and hundreds of other creatures. The game famously uses multisided dice in gameplay to further the imaginary story and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master.”

Not really. Plenty of D&D monsters can be done with good old make up. Shoot the whole show in Ireland or New Zealand and you need about the same amount of CGI as The Witcher.
or just take a page from stargate and accept that every planet looks like canadia forests :D

Absolutely. Shows like Hercules and Xena were helt back by the cost and state of special effects, and their intended audience. But Game of Thrones lead the charge for big budget fantasy shows aimed at a mature audience. Now we have shows like the Witcher following example. But arguably, the Witcher is much closer to the tone of D&D.
Netflix has a modern sort of those shows in new adventures of monkey verrrry loosely inspired by journey to the west & other wuxia-sque stuff that basically plays out like a d&d campaign with a bit of camp. Sfx like glowy/flaming/sparking/etc weapons smoke teleport & spell flinging that looks good enough for tv is no doubt a lot cheaper than it was back in the 90s & early 2ks when hercules & xena were still around

Well yeah they’re making a Lord of the Rings TV show as we speak. Though D&D would need a lot more CGI!
And a Wheel of Time tv show. And there is the Witcher tv show too. And there is a Conan show in the works.

A tv show based on a D&D IP seems like a natural fit, as long as it's not called D&D.

With the proliferation of bigger budget, effects centered shows, there's no reason for anyone to suggest "human-ish only." Modern TV, even low budget stuff like SyFy and Shudder and even MTV, has demonstrated that fantasy can be fun, engaging, and embrace the worlds that have been built over decades.

They aren't going to forgo using the name - that would just be shooting yourself in the marketing foot. Beyond that, there's no way Hasbro would let them use the IP without using the name.

I think they should mine the latest Dr. Who format. An ensemble cast ( and production crew) that rotates out characters/showrunners every few years and slowly builds a library of bad guy costumes and effects over the seasons.

Like perhaps the mind flayers are S1 baddies and then come back for filler episodes in later seasons.
They could always ask to borrow the Ood costumes from Doctor Who for their mind flayers.

“Let them”? I think it’s the other way round!
Well, obviously. But I was going off the base assumption of the post I was responding to - that the producers would want create a D&D show without using the name, to which hugely unlikely event I'm sure Hasbro would just flat out go "no".

wotc has been so focused on developing FRFRPlanescapeFRFRFRplanescapeFRFR that they've been developing plotlines largely around ancient mythical brings & individuals or entirely replicable generic wizards/generic fantasy cities. The reason so many d&d shows & movies never happen is likely related to "uhh we aren't making a movie based on drizzt" and the lawyers saying "so writer bob you should use this guy rather than this guy based on him". The witcher has a netflix show yes, but the world that IP operates within is far less generic than medieval europe but with magic. I highly doubt that a d&d tvshow will be set in one of the more unique & cohesively developed worlds like eberron or darksun. While ravenloft has some unique aspects, it's largely gothic horror & wotc has spent a long time trying to strip out or downplay the unique elements to replace them with a vaerunized ravenloft
