Artificers should have no problem casting shield. Either they are using a tool focus or an Infusion in hand as a focus to cast all their spells. If they want to cast with their hands full of weapon and shield they just have to infuse one of them and use that as a focus. Since all spells are considered to have the M component for Artificers they don't have the same issues with casting Shield as others wanting to do so in combat. They don't need to have warcaster as long as the infuse their weapon of choice.

Except shield is VS not VM. Oops.

This is a good point, since an artificer can use any of there infused items as a spellcasting focus it's very unlikely that they will ever lack one. No need for warcaster.

I would say the artificer is by far the broadest and most flexible, although bards do better in the social pillar.

You have proved very effectively the subjectiveness of ratings.

Which is typical min/maxer overreaction. Not quite as good as another option is not the same as being crap.

There's the occasional stinker in 5E, Alchemist us one if them.

It hangs out with the Berserker, 5 Elements Monk and Beastmaster ranger. They're having a party.

Except for Artificer. For Artificer it is VSM because all spells are considered to have M as stated in their Spellcasting feature. Oops to you.

Irrelevant because there class feature doesn't negate the S part of the spell.

Shield is basically a Sorcerer/wizard spell casting it is easy.

Other classes like Eldritch Knights, Artificers, Clerics well they might have issues casting it.

The rules are that if you have a focus in hand you can use it for the M component and use the same hand holding the focus for the S component.

The problem most caster have is this doesn't work for S components if there is no M component. So most caster need Warcaster to cast Shield I'd they have their hands full even if one of them is their focus (ie Focus works for VM and VSM spells but not VS or S spells)

This is not the case with Artificers because they add the M component to ALL spells for them. So having a Focus in their hand (say an infused weapon) let's them do both the S and M component. They don't need Warcaster to cast Shield if one of their hands is holding a focus.
