This one at least makes sense to me--it's the same reason that Lightning Bolt, with it's "Range: Self (100-foot line)" doesn't target the caster.
More broadly, I find it useful to know in this instance that the errata to Booming Blade wasn't intended to change the target of the spell. The errata was apparently intended as a clean-up of the language, rather than as a nerf.
