D&D 5E 20th level Sorcerer vs the world

Look, my IDM did not take initiative for them. The first ogre felt severe headaches and severe malaise.

That's not how attacking while hiding works RAW, and that's not how Mind Spike works RAW. All kinds of crazy things can happen with house rules! But RAW, being able to kill enemies in multiple rounds without them being allowed to roll initiative is not one of them.

Mind Spike doesn't give "headaches and malaise." It does 3d8 damage and makes the target's position always known to you.

This is an extremely inexperienced DM. Ogre mages have Dancing Lights and Fog Cloud. The former is extremely useful for exposing hidden creatures, and the second for blocking sight-based spells (which is most of the non-AOE spells).

Expeditious Retreat shuts down Mind Spike.

You are no longer Hiding, and so your position is known, if you use your crossbow. You've got 4 sorcery points at 4th level, and Fire Bolt does 1d10 damage. Ogre mages have 117 hp each, so no, you don't have enough sorcery points to stay hidden and whittle them down with Fire Bolt. Ogres use Lightning Bolt. Now it's over. Sounds like nobody knew the rules in this scenario.
WTF.

Man, seriously. At least read the description of the spell. I know my target's location. Not the victim. Expedius Retreat is used when my Lv2 spells run out and start attacking with Crossbolt and Firebolt.

You mean this?

You reach into the mind of one creature you can see within range. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw, taking 3d8 psychic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. On a failed save, you also always know the target’s location until the spell ends, but only while the two of you are on the same plane of existence. While you have this knowledge, the target can’t become hidden from you, and if it’s invisible, it gains no benefit from that condition against you.

I don't see anything in there that says the victim doesn't know it's being attacked.

While 4 ogre mage were searching for 4 full rounds....

And I have.

All Subtle Spell does is keep someone from noticing that you are casting before the spell goes off.

If a spell does damage, the damage is perceptible. That's the spell's effect.

This is really not that complicated.
Damage, it's perceptible, but It isn't clear that is a spell.

But it's simple, it's psychic damage, you have no idea what's going on, since it has no visible effect like fire damage.

My DM decided that he had severe headaches and started to feel bad and died.

The others became suspicious and started looking for something.

Yeah. I figure killing someone with psychic damage results in blood and gray matter coming out their ears, at least.

Well, except in the case of Vicious Mockery, in which case they literally die of shame ... 😉

Mind Spike does 3d8 damage. Ogre mages have 117 hp. A 4th level sorcerer has 3 second-level slots and 4 sorcery points, so he can burn 3 of them to create one additional 2nd-level slot. I don't know how anyone gets >=117 damage out of Mind Spike at that level.

Yeah you're right I'm damaged i'm attacked by no-one and it can't be a spell well let's think what could it be...Ah the wind right I'm dumb!

Last time I played Shadow Sorcerer level 4, stealth casting I killed 4 ogre mages alone with Subtle Mental Spike.
It was funny, they lost and didn't know what happened.

That was in 3.5 ? In 5e ogre mage are called Oni and their regeneration of 10 HP a round is enough to heal more than half of the damage Mind Spike can do. Unless you cast it like 88 times in a row and they consistently failed their roll. Besides if your DM had the Oni take damage without explanation and... do nothing until they die, he's a loosy DM who thinks that creatures should behave like in an old CRPG where you could kill one guard and not having the guards next to him notice or care...

Plus they are CR 7. A level 4 character pitted against 4 CR 7 monsters... it's a 1,700 XP adventuring budget vs an adjusted XP value of 29,000. Very bad DM'ing to design this encounter.
