D&D 5E 20th level Sorcerer vs the world

I agree it was generous, although I actually agree with Hohige that Subtle Mind Spike wouldn't automatically reveal the location that you are hidden at. The enemy would need to actually look for you.

Yes, and every DM would agree subtle spell does not reveal your position. That is explicitly what it is for. What Hohige is arguing is that the enemies do not get to roll initiative, because psychic spells cast from stealth are exempted from combat rules.

It seems that the people here are used to a lot of Metagame.
You suffer effects that have no visual effects and are imperceptible.

Whatever you do, shoot a fireball in a random place or go out looking for enemies you may not notice.
I never saw that kind of thing. Haha

I agree that seems to be the position he's arguing. It's wrong, of course, but that's what he's arguing.

It was extremely in your favor. If something is losing hit points, that's something it's going to notice. Oni are intelligent enough to actively look around, and if they can't find something, leave.

Or, maybe just drop a cone of cold in a random direction, then leave.
Hit Point, level isn't what a creature know.
It is what the player know, not your character.
This is essentially, metagame.

No it seems you're the only one that is used to metagaming ;)

Metagame.
Hit points are a way of tracking damage. Well, sort of. Ish. It's complicated, and it depends on the edition.

If something is losing hit points, it knows it's taking damage; that's the relevant bit.

My DM essentially forbids any attempt at Metagame. If your player knows, it doesn't mean that your character knows. That simple.
You lose XP certainly.

So, does your DM allow you to keep track of spell slots? Or sorcery points? Or does he allow Battlemasters to keep track of their Superiority Dice?

Because all of those are at least metagame as hit points are.

But taking damage--even if it's tracked as hit points--isn't metagame.

I'm dubious that Mind Spike literally killing someone would just be a headache. It's doing damage to the target on the scale to being stabbed or burned.

Well... Mind Spikes does 3d8 damage (average 14, 7 on a failed save). Ogre mages regenerate 10 HP per round. It's an intolerable suffering that would kill most commoner, but for the Ogre Mage, even if he failed all 4 saves, he only lost a net 14% of his HP and less than 2% if he succeeded on half the saves.
