D&D 5E 20th level Sorcerer vs the world

You know somebody cast a spell on you, because you tried to mentally resist it (i.e. made a saving throw) and took damage. You also know that whoever is attacking you is unseen, i.e., probably outside your 60' darkvision.

No. You dont know. You just take mental damage.
Spell? A curse? Your party friend? Your hotdog? 😆😆

Probably not your hotdog, but it could be a trap, or environmental effect. In such a situation I would expect a creature to retreat to somewhere they had been previously that they did not take damage at, and the proceed from there. If they took damage again then it's likely coming from a malicious source.

We've already got a SA ruling on Suggestion: when it ends, or you succeed your save, you are a spell was cast on you. Presumably this is also true if you lose a battle of wills and have a few synapses fried.
