D&D 5E Ray Winninger mentions third project!

WotC's Ray Winninger has confirmed that another D&D release, by James Wyatt, will be released in between Witchlight (September) and Strixhaven (November). Strixhaven was Amanda Hamon's project, while Witchlight is Chris Perkins'. That assumes he's not referring to the Feywild accessory kit in September.

A lot of people are asking Qs about the [D&D] releases for the rest of this year.

Yes, WILD BEYOND THE WITCHLIGHT is the [Chris Perkins] story product I referenced in our dev blog. STRIXHAVEN is [Amanda Hamon's] project. We have not yet announced [James Wyatt's] project, which releases between WITCHLIGHT and STRIXHAVEN.

Why did we announce STRIXHAVEN so early? Pretty simple--there was no way to release the STRIX-related Unearthed Arcana without letting the cat out of the bag.

You'll learn a lot more about all of these products at D&D Live on G4, July 16 and 17. And yes, there is still a little surprise or two ahead.

And the Forgotten Realms aren't generic how?
Nobody said FR wasn’t generic. But it’s been the default location for the majority of 5e releases since launch and new audiences already know it.

Look at it like this: you already have Vanilla ice cream on the shelf. Do you really expect you’ll move a ton more French Vanilla or Extra Creamy Vanilla when the consumers are clamoring for new flavors or are mad that you still haven’t released Rocky Road or Cherry Chocolate Chip yet?

I’m not saying it will never happen, but beyond grognard interest, there’s not much about GH that’s marketable to modern audiences beyond “The Original Classic Setting!” - we’ll maybe get something on the anniversary like others have said. I wouldn’t hold my breath for much else.

CR and Exandria are in a very different place with the current D&D fanbase than DL to say the least.

When the new DL trilogy comes out we will see what WOTC does.
Except it's a counter to the argument.

They also don't own or even internally prompted the PAX book, that was an external project FIRST. External to WOTC itself. I'm also willing to bet that Hasbro came to them about the stranger things box, unprompted by WotC. Also I'm almost (almost) certain something similar happened with the Rick and Morty boxed set.

We also KNOW that Target prompted the Essentials box. In fact it was so far OFF WotC's plans that the only way they could get it done was for Chris Perkins to work over time through his holiday season, very late nights.

So if the argument is that WotC is a "not invented here" place, I'm pretty sure that argument is bunk.

Read what I wrote more carefully.

CR and Exandria
Acquisitions Incorporated.
Stranger Things.
Rick and Morty.
Target wanting a follow up to a hot seller...

All initiatives of hot IP and a top selling intro set that made themselves relevant in the current D&D boom.

No one is using the words "hot IP" and Dragonlance in the same sentence these days.

Hickman and Weiss are all about a new book trilogy that they wanted to write, so they got a license to do so from WOTC.

WOTC was cool with that, until they weren't, got sued, and now they are again.

At no point in all this has WOTC sent out so much as a tweet saying: "Look who we're working with again... So excited!"

You have hope that the new DL book trilogy means something for 5e.

I don't.

You can change a few words and this argument, and it applies equally well to Dragonlance.

IMHO a whole lot of things would need to go right before WOTC decides that adding Kender Flavored Vanilla ice cream to the menu goes to the top of their to-do list.

Its a very simple point.

CR and Acq Inq are popular and relevant these days. Dragonlance just, isn't.

Letting the Hickmans write a novel they want to write and you can throw out there as a gauge of expression is a lot more cheaper than developing an entire Dragonlance expansion without knowing if folks will bite. Throwing out a brand new setting such as Magic School is likely to draw in more people, as opposed Generic Western Fantasy number 4 (But this time its based on an old book) which is really only going to draw in the Dragonlance people and not a new audience.

Wow I didn’t know squeaky noises could be so condescending?

“letting the hickmans”

talking as if wotc has zero intel about the popularity of Dragonlance, like they are raw newbs at this publishing thing, throwing crap in the walk to see if it sticks?!?! Of all things.

and “it’s a simple idea” har har, sorry I’m so dense.

I think you are confusing your dislike of “just another generic setting” as some kind of actual data.
