D&D 5E Is 5e really that different?

This answer is quite simple. WOTC 5e is simply not D&D. It is a different game. D&D hasn't been D&D since AD&D. There is a great new youtube video on the subject called "What is Dungeons & Dragons and what is not"
LOL. Why is AD&D D&D? Why not the blue box set or even the old chainmail rules? Who gets to decide what qualifies?

It seems that the WOTC 5e fanboys took over this thread. WOTC is not pro league, its noob friendly entry to roleplaying games.
Thanks for an example of what the OP was asking about by trash talking a game millions of people enjoy. No game is for everyone, but calling people who like the edition "fanboys"? Seriously. What about all those "fangirls" out there. Don't they get some love too?

I don't think its a matter of standards or of the differences in game content we are looking for.

Those are setting books, but with those setting books there are rules expansions and genre expansions easily harvested for your game. Alongside those settings are adventure locations that you can drop into your world, NPCs you can use, and so on. And each of those publishers also has non-setting content designed for people who really don't want to be bothered with the rest of the setting stuff.

Let's not try to hide behind possibilities like "I think you like bad material" or "Your material could never be relevant to me."
It's a bit frustrating that's what you took away from my comment because I never said anything remotely close to 'you liked bad material'. I said the setting material was likely much better quality in general than the kind of class material I would be looking for. The implication being that you like good material but that the kind of material you like isn't the kind of material I'd be out to buy.

"Your material could never be relevant to me" - Setting material isn't relevant to me. It's not something I'm very interested in. I understand I can take things out of settings/adventure books and incorporate into my own campaigns. But that's not really something I do.

Also, if it's not a matter of standards and differences in game content we are looking for then what are you saying it is? Be explicit.

***Note my objection isn't that DMs guild doesn't have any good content, or even good class content. It's that there's no easy way on it to find good well designed class content that is balanced against current 5e classes (which is something I would be highly interested in).

Your realize DMsGuilff has something like that. There are a group of creatures who have a preferred status and have been/ are professional designers. I can’t remember what they are called, but they have their own category. On top of that there is a rating, review, and ranking system. It is very easy to sort this all out with a few clicks and find the post professional and best selling content. If that is what you are looking for
I've always felt that the Adepts (I think that's what they're called) were chosen for popularity among WotC folks as opposed to them actually being the best DM's Guild has to offer. In other words, there's a political and a social aspect to it.

The last new version I learned to run was 4e. I wasn't bad, thought I still prefer earlier editions. Why does 5e make so many people upset?

I’m an old school player and people who think this way, IMO, simply lack imagination and conviction. Sorry I’m feeling salty as I’m waiting for my lunch (which is 20 minutes late)
Mod Note:

Being salty doesn’t excuse the incivility of saying others lack imagination. Don’t you know excessive salt- even the metaphorical variety- increases blood pressure?

My advice: cut back on the salt before posting.
