In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

I don't understand the dislike of feat chains (though, for me, I don't like having to choose between ASI and feat chains, feats are just so much more interesting and wish they'd go back to giving us feats).

If there was another way to handle world specific groups like the Knights or High Sorcerers, that would be great. I don't know what that is....but I always liked the old "subclasses" that were tied to the fiction.

Possibly a Idiot.
I can't do a deep dive right now, so I will just point out feat chains already exist in 5e, thanks to the Strixhaven book with it's Strixhaven Initiate and Strixhaven Mascot feats.

To be quite honest, I don't like their implementation, but I will have to get into why later when I have time to type.

I like feat chains as well. It gives players who want to invest that way a bonus. What I didn't like about this UA were the Kender. Kender are not just a bit resistant to fear, they are completely immune. If the Kender is not immune, it's not a Kender.
Good point (put in the survey) and it is not like that would be a huge boost. At least not IME.

Yeah, this stuff is exactly like the Strixhaven material. I think they are hiding a few more Background options.

I suspect that tying a Level 1 Feat to a Background is what they are planning for the new Core.
