In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

I saw the title and my first thought was "unless they pull some major change to them I am going to bombard them with bad rating for kenders" but even just this (having not read article yet) gives me some hole they MAY be able to pull this off... miss labeled thieves for magic reason already sounds better then "an intelligent race is incapable of understanding personal property"
To fair they are sort of "cursed". They simply CANNOT understand. Like all Dwarves in DL must craft something. And all Gnomes must have seek knowledge in some fashion.

I'm not a fan of how the changes to the kender alters the lore around them, for reasons that I think are better explained by Graeme Barber.

Sounds pretty much like every other complaint about the whole “nothing outside the core books is canon” comment to me.

I could be wrong but I suspect that we will not see tight world building from WoTC ever again. The game is too big and tight world building will be seen as off putting to those that do not like the specifics.
If you want world building you will have to steal it from elsewhere.
or it end up the major point of 6e.

On the choosing the lunar cycle that is for the lazy among us that could not be too bothered by tracking time and tides.

I also would love to playtest some of this but unfortunately my regular group are pretty tight for time so i do not see it happening.

I wonder are they thinking of making feats separate from ASI's since of one need more than 3 feats to fully develop a Knight of Solamnia or a Mage of High Sorcery then getting your primary stat up as well is going to be an issue. Some people may put off by preference for other feats.

At first I was iffy on seeing them return, but the feats themselves are pretty strong to act as standalone feats, and it fits with how magic is often treated in Krynn as something you have to sacrifice for (i.e. not getting those ASIs).

I actually like the feat chains and would like to see them extend to higher levels

In general, I am super happy with this UA. If the book really hits later this year, I am going to be overjoyed.

My only complaint is that for the Knight of Solamnia Feats there's not an additional requirement: for Solamnic men: a luxurious mustache.

Interesting, they are following the path of Strixhaven with Backgrounds providing a Level 1 Feat. I think there is an implied Background that theybprovided the Feat Chain, but not the Background, for a PC filling the role of Goldmoon in the original Campaign.

Winninger said that thebclasic Settings coming in 2022 would have different formats: I think we might see a re-do of the DL series with Setting details, like Strixhaven but with even more Adventure material.

It is a decision to make the game more generic, to fit in any world. You aren't going to get lore in the rules that is "interesting" and tied to a world like Pathfinder is. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of good writers at WotC.....
Yeah, D&D is a big-tent game, meant to be adaptable to many different settings. Of course they’re going to keep lore tied to PC options generic, so that they can be used in any setting.
