In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

-I definitely think all Sorcerer subclasses should get bonus spells by now.
-I like that there's more uses of expending hit die with some of those feats, something I felt 5e should have thought about at the start.
-I feel there's a missing background that gives Divine Favored for free.
-Also going forward are we going to see more backgrounds give bonus feats? Strixhaven started it.
-The feats which range from average to above average, might be hard to convince some players to give up their precious 4th level ability score increases. Perhaps being in the organization and moving up the ranks just gives them the feat for free, there's some precedence as the optional training in downtime rule can get one to learn a feat.
-Lunar Magic, I like how it's a versatile subclass that you can pick for your purposes. It definitely feels more like a subclass that can be in any campaign as I don't remember Dragonlance having anything like that.
-It's good that they take into consideration that the classes are different since the last edition that Dragonlance existed in.

I saw the title and my first thought was "unless they pull some major change to them I am going to bombard them with bad rating for kenders" but even just this (having not read article yet) gives me some hole they MAY be able to pull this off... miss labeled thieves for magic reason already sounds better then "an intelligent race is incapable of understanding personal property"

If you love the novels, its fun to play in the setting.
Um it has a very large good vs evil bend to it. The gods are very active in the world (more or less). Dragons aren't really a rare sight.
Also sort of post-apocalyptic.
One of the biggest things is that There Must Be Balance. More than the broad strokes thing AO has going on in Forgotten Realms, the gods of Evil are allowed to somewhat openly be worshipped and MUST be allowed the freedom to do so, or the gods of evil throw a fit and threaten to flip the table on the entire setting. The main problem being they are almost never content with just open worship, and continuously plot to gain more than their fair share of power. Which is how you get all the large wars and smaller conflicts in an almost cyclical fashion.

Like the tide, good has to keep fighting them back but can't wipe them out or completely condemn the behavior.

It's probably more than a little frustrating for the good guys. Haha.

They can change season whenever they finish a long rest.

I mean, I agree, I think having your powers tied to the current lunar phase (and current season) would be cooler. I’m just saying, you’d want to give the subclass a new 6th level feature, and probably change the 18th level one to let you use the burst of your current phase with a Metamagic point.
Damn, I've been playing Eladrin wrong! thanks,

I agree with Barber’s assessment 100%. If anyone asks me why I’m dissatisfied with 5e lore I’m just gonna link this article.

Hopefully as the next edition gets closer Wizards will want to hire on world builders worth a damn. Paizo is full of talented writers who would love a pay raise, Wizards should give them some competitive offers.
I could be wrong but I suspect that we will not see tight world building from WoTC ever again. The game is too big and tight world building will be seen as off putting to those that do not like the specifics.
If you want world building you will have to steal it from elsewhere.

It is a decision to make the game more generic, to fit in any world. You aren't going to get lore in the rules that is "interesting" and tied to a world like Pathfinder is. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of good writers at WotC.....
