D&D 5E Kobolds are also from the Feywild now?

The cosmology shifts overall in 1e to 2e, and 2e to 3e, was part of the larger story of the D&D worlds and did not change history; whether you like the changes or not, they happened in universe.
Which is crazy way to do it. Your fiction shouldn't be dictated by mechanical changes made for playability.

The 4e cosmology shift straight up rewrote the universe, and the stuff they're doing now is doing that too.
Which is the sane way to do it.

I mean, probably the single biggest screwup in the design of fourth edition was the designers failing to notice that a huge segment of D&D tables still didn't use minis and grids even after years of 3.x pushing them, and therefore designed an edition full of character and monster powers that relied heavily on grid positioning. A revision done by a team that completely isolated from how D&D was played in the wild was doomed from the beginning.
This just not true. The game did not require a grid and minis. We played hours and hours of 4e with just TotM. There is nothing about the rules that prevent you from playing that way. Knowing you push your opponent 10’ is as helpful in TotM as it is on a grid.

Well, we had done that with 3.x, but 4E made it very, very difficult for my group in practice
It was a hard break. 5E, on the other hand, fits that style perfectly.

How? I didn’t play 3e, but we had no issues playing 4e TotM. What about it made it difficult for you.

PS we didn’t use the “required” on line tools either

The core books are being rewritten potentially as we speak. You don't think that First World stuff they're so excited about will be in there?
I’m not sure, but I don’t think it will be canon / default. As @Parmandur noted, fizabn’s, apparently, already paints the Dragon Mythology with a big grain of salt

so honestly I don’t think they are “so excited about it”
