Probably Hasbro is thinking about bringing the 80's toys back. Some of which, like the Hook Horror, were quite nice. OTOH, 3e had a supplement for the Cartoon Series, so I think keeping it in the zeitgeist is important for the brand.

And who knows, maybe they'll get a Netflix adaptation...(wait is that a good or a bad thing? Between MotU: Revelations and Arcane, I'm not sure anymore!).

Most major cities in the Realms do have extensive sewer systems. We see this for the first time I think in Eye of the Beholder.

Don't forget Baldur's Gate in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. We see sewers as well.
