Re: leaving your "system".

I wonder if as quoted above, when you travel far enough to encounter the silvery mist and transition to the astral, is it mandatory?

Like a beach, to progress farther you must enter the water.

Or can you not transition, and just wander forever?

Probably like the beach analogy.

EDIT: Because in my campaign, the Void (Far Realm) is the space between Stars (atoms) and some adventures require travel through the space.

Which would not work if they have to go to the Astral.

You can change the lore and how things like this work however you like.

Gaming is fun, and fun is for everyone
When asked if any of the Spelljammer books in the slipcase will be available for individual sale Perkins said that they're only talking about the bundle package at this time. “But it's safe to say that we'll have some mechanism for breaking up the material into smaller pieces later,” said Perkins.

So can we all stop griping already? It seems obvious to me that this was the plan all along.

Didn't see that, but it's good to hear.

I'm already thinking about how my own cosmology preferences fit with this model too. Regardless of what they decide is "official" I'm already thinking that there are different systems that work different ways. Some systems are smaller in size and when you hit the edge you either turn around and go back or go into the Astral. Others will be larger - like our own universe but allow you to enter the Astral at a certain point out from the planets - but you could keep going into deep space. Entering the Astral in those systems would be like hitting hyperspace to hop from one solar system to another within the same Prime plane.

(This is very similar to how I ran Spelljammer-modified games in Mystara back in the day - and with how the Astral plane was described in the BECMI Immortals set, making it a hyperspace dimension is almost rules-as-written.)

That's what we're discussing. From what @overgeeked said, it sounds like there will be a misty zone instead of solid crystal sphere. But they might sidebar crystal spheres as an option (since it would be easy to make the switch...)

@overgeeked can you re-link the quote, or at least the post you mentioned it in?
It just occurred to me that since they're moving spell jammer to the astral and not having phlogiston or Crystal spheres there's no reason not to suppose the crystal spheres and phlogiston still exists. They're just in the Ethereal where they have always been. Spell jammer just doesn't take place there anymore. But radiant citadel does.

Thinking more on the subject of the Psurlons of the Astral Plane, I guess they could combine them with the Syllix which are the Spelljammer versions of the Sathar from Star Frontiers. Though the Sathar have been depicted as more Earthworm like, the Syllix were depicted as being more Salamander like, while the Psurlons have been shown as being more Lamprey-like (though one artist made them Earthworm like).
