WotC's Jeremy Crawford has announced a new Unearthed Arcana article today with redesigns from the prior Heroes of Krynn UA based on feedback, and in the following video he discusses that feedback and what's in the article:
  • New iteration of Kender based on feedback survey, due to mixed response. This time is a back to basics, aiming to capture 1E AD&D fearlessness, curiosity and taunting skills. Delve into their origins from Gnomes in deep history.
  • Kender are no longer fey creatures who grab objects from the Feywild
  • Tweaked Feats from prior article
  • Tweaked Backgrounds from prior article
  • Brand new rule giving a list of free Feats for ANY Background
  • Free Feat rule for Level 4 for all characters that doesn't take the ASI away, based on a curated list
  • Reveals that in the Adventure, healing magic is already back.

A kender culture background can grant something like a sleight-of-hand advantage in certain situations.
I don't see why it can't or shouldn't be racial. It fits the old Kender theme, without making them kleptomaniacs with no sense of personal property. Win/Win.

Yes, something flavourful and accurate to the old lore like that would be great. ;)
Great for causing flamewars and getting people to not touch Dragonlance, certainly. Kender are deservedly, by a comfortable margin, the most hated race in the history of D&D and it's down to their stealing and lying about it. And WotC don't seem stupid enough to want to bring back why they are reviled.

Good job Wizards, you just turned the most controversial D&D race ever into the blandest one. That's certainly a way to solve this issue.
.
I dunno. They're fearless and they annoy enemies into trying to kill them.

Without the racial kleptomania and being so dumb they can't even comprehend the idea of personal property, that actually makes them sound kinda neat.

People suck, and play their characters in an annoying way.

These things happen.

Here's another question: If a Fighter Echo Knight subclass takes the Knight of Solamnia feat, does that mean my Echoes can *also use my Superiority Die/Knightly Order Maneuvers too?

Fearless . . . sure, that's kind of interesting. Slightly more interesting than Halfling's Bravery feature. Their taunt feature is kind of funny, but I don't think that it's anywhere as good of a feature as the magical portal pockets idea was.
