D&D 5E Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

One day, I hope to actually play DnD.
There seems to be this thing against giving people from other worlds levels that are high. Gandalf is 5th level! Aragorn is 6th level! The best human in the world is 8th level or 10th level. And so on. I've never understood it.
Because DnD is such a high power level fantasy world, much higher than what alot of other fantastic worlds depict, and outside of anime they typically don’t have very sharp power curves, Gandalf while revered in his universe, is very small potatoes compared to some of shenanigans that a DnD wizard can achieve

Stuff that is more grounded is fine imo. And it's inspiration. I'm just against special beam cannon and tornadoes from spinning. Or Hercules lifting the planet when Atlas tricked him. The basic fighter is supposed to be mundane. That's the point. Anime inspired options and subclasses to add spice and variety? Sure! Just keep it on the level of DnD. Just don't expect to replicate myth.
Mundane Fighters really don't fit the 'level' of DND, they belong in lower magic settings like Westeros or Middle Earth where magic users are also much more restrained, or are more limited by cast times, or at the very least where armies they can lead at higher level are a more important part of stories.

Gandalf was a politician and a bit of a charlatan that (in the books) didn't do much magic that could be verified by anyone else. Sure he theoretically did a lot of things off-screen, but that's assuming he's a trustworthy narrator. He had some flash-bangs that scared off goblins. He had a fast horse and a way of convincing people to do what he wanted. He had a staff that he broke as a one-time thing to bring down a bridge. The fight with the Balor? Who knows what really happened or if Gandalf's version is at all accurate?

But for the most part? When things really got rough, someone else took all the risks. He was good at talking people into doing incredibly stupid and risky things like sending a hobbit along with a small group of dwarves off to face a dragon that had absolutely no chance of success. Merry and Pippin working with the Ents? Gandalf took all the credit even though he had nothing to do with it. Minas Tirith? He kept talking about how any moment now he was going to let loose and everyone needed to watch out! But then he never actually did anything.

But I think Gandalf being a politician was kind of the point. Frodo was the every-man commoner summoned to go to war while the politicians moved them around like pawns on a chess board.

P.S. Yes, I know in the background books he's a malar(sp?) and all that fun stuff. I'm talking about the impression I got from reading The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy when I was young.

Something, something Balrog, something.

Gandalf literally sang the universe into existence with his brethren. No D&D wizard ever did that. And one of Gandalf's siblings moves the sun through the sky, and another the moon. Yet another raised Numenor from the sea floor and raised it up as a island nation and fastened another island to the sea floor when it reached Aman. Melian another like Gandalf shrouded an elf nation such that not even Morgoth could find it and her daughter who was half-Maia, was able to use her power to overcome Morgoth and put him to sleep. Gandalf is one such as them and has a great deal of power that he didn't show, because he was instructed to limit himself while in Middle Earth. He is NOT 6th level.

Generally, when people talk about Gandalf's power they're discussing things he did on screen during the novels when he was in an adventuring party, like throw flaming acorns at wolves who would have killed him had the eagles not bailed him out.

So if Elminster was in a book and all you saw him do was cast several fireballs, toss a few lightning bolts, etc., he'd be low level as well? Gandalf did those things.

Edit: Gandalf was never in any danger from those wolves.

Sounds like the GM forgot to vet gandalf’s backstory before approving the character.
“Oh yeah my wizard character helped weave the universe together before this”
“Your 6th level character did that you say?”
“Yup, totally”
