Look, when I took Latin in the prehistoric ages (i.e., about 40 years ago), I learned the declensions. "Into the middle of things" is "in media res" -- I remember looking and there was no declension of medias in the declension table for medium. Looking it up now on Wiktionary, I see that's still the case. I don't know anything about Latin anymore, but I remember a particularly heated nerd debate in the lunchroom at my school. Heck, I'm not sure why it's not "in medium rerum" -- isn't that the more correct form?
Horace used in medias res in Ars Poetica circa 13 BCE, so I'll defer to his knowledge of Latin.

I remember arguments about how it shouldn't actually be carpe diem.
