WotC Dragonlance: Everything You Need For Shadow of the Dragon Queen

WotC has shared a video explaining the Dragonlance setting, and what to expect when it is released in December.

World at War: Introduces war as a genre of play to fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons.

Dragonlance: Introduces the Dragonlance setting with a focus on the War of the Lance and an overview of what players and DMs need to run adventures during this world spanning conflict.

Heroes of War: Provides character creation rules highlighting core elements of the Dragonlance setting, including the kender race and new backgrounds for the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery magic-users. Also introduces the Lunar Sorcery sorcerer subclass with new spells that bind your character to Krynn's three mystical moons and imbues you with lunar magic.

Villains: Pits heroes against the infamous death knight Lord Soth and his army of draconians.

Notes --
  • 224 page hardcover adventure
  • D&D's setting for war
  • Set in eastern Solamnia
  • War is represented by context -- it's not goblins attacking the village, but evil forces; refugees, rumours
  • You can play anything from D&D - clerics included, although many classic D&D elements have been forgotten
  • Introductory scenarios bring you up to speed on the world so no prior research needed

Am I the only person who thinks stopping play mid-session to setup a board game sounds like an awful idea?
Mid-game sure. But more likely, you would have the campaign punctuated with the occasional board game session.

They say you don't need the board game or engage in mass battle to play the campaign book, so it should be easy to ignore if you are not into that.

I've I've mixed war games in with my TTRPG in the past and enjoyed it. Normally a war game sessions would be primarily dedicated to the wargame and it would be switching over to RPG occasionally, which is much easier than the reverse. I can't imagine many people are going to stop a TTRPG session to set up a war game. Though, if you have a big enough space and can have to board game set up on another table and you move over to it as needed, that might work.

For Clerics, you can always say that they encountered A Golden DisK and said encounter is what gave the PC Cleric their power. And then you could always play it off that the PC Cleric has no idea WHERE exactly these powers came from, but everything changed/manifested after finding that Golden Disk. But it's a minor Golden Disk so it shatters upon its power being drained to give the Cleric theirs. The MAIN Golden Disk (the one Goldmoon finds) doesn't break and is unique amongst the "various" minor Golden Disks that DO shatter.

This post on the WotC website seems to suggest it: Dragonlance

"Optionally, use the Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn board game to bring this adventure’s massive battles to your Dungeons & Dragons game."

and this from the Warriors of Krynn boardgame info...

"Demonstrates options for integrating play with six Shadow of the Dragon Queen encounters by providing scenarios with win/loss outcomes that impact the roleplaying game experience, resulting in different encounter and quest choices for players"

I think the options for integrating play with the Shadow of the Dragon Queen will be in the board game, not the adventure book.

Dragonborn can be pretty much refluffed as Draconians. Specifically, the PC Draconians can either be straight up servants of Tahksis (Evil Campaign) OR they can be liberated Dragon Eggs that were saved from the corruption/whatever is that makes the Draconian. Now your Draconian PC has a stake in the war because now they are trying to prevent others of their kind from being used as weapons of war.

Likewise: Paladins could still manifest their abilities as a result of crossing a Minor Golden Disk. Except the power is a variant/manifests differently, which gives their Oaths the ability to manifest the powers of a Paladin.
Or you pretty much make the Paladin the Rose Knight stand in. Refluff the name and keep the chassis the same

First, the disks are platinum, not gold. Second, the entire collection of disks is a single relic.

Lastly, and most important, Goldmoon's power didn't come from the Disks. In fact, the Disks don't have any magic in them at all. They're just evidence that the gods of Krynn are real. Goldmoon's power comes from her faith.

I imagine the adventure will provide an option (like a sidebar) to use the board game to resolve the 6 encounters noted. Include the effects of the outcome of the board game and how that affects the adventure. It doesn't make sense to have specific adventure encounter information in a board game that can be played differently. Though I guess there could be some information in both of them.

I will admit that I never read any of the Dragonlance novels when they first came out as I didn't learn about them till later. So, a number of things I do know, are just the things I've heard and seen on him from posts. (So, I didn't know they were actually made of Platinum, instead of gold, despite being called Golden Disks.)

Still, that still means you can still go with the Minor disks idea. The Minor disks being "gold" in color and single use, while the main Single Relic Disks are Platinum.

But then, I don't offer answers: I offer solutions.

They're not called golden disks, they're called the Disks of Mishakal. And they, again ,are not relics. They're just scriptures.
