Backgrounds (p. 7). The following text was added to the end of the paragraph: “These backgrounds each give a feat. If a character takes a background from elsewhere and doesn’t get a feat from that background, the character gains one of the following feats of the player’s choice:
Magic Initiate, Skilled, or Tough.”

So 1st level bonus feats are now official in Spelljammer and Dragonlance.

Interesting. I knew that they were pushing toward at least one baseline feat for everyone in "One D&D." Kinda surprised they're putting existing 5e in that direction too.

It's a short list with only one "good" feat, but hey, better than nothing.

Now let them actually stop hiding behind the most basic of feat choices and have them expanded out to others like Skulker, Keen Mind, etc, etc, etc.

I think they are avoiding any feat with an ASI as a first level bonus feat, keeping with the 1D&D design goal. I also think they will keep to feats that will be level 1 feats in 1D&D, to preserve continuity.

That does leave some options on the table they didn't use, but I think I see some of the design rationale.

Wow! So, once again WotC simply finally decides to make "official" what many groups have been doing for a long time...

AMAZING!

Now, they just have to open it up to all the feats and they'll get it right. ;)

Tweaked this a tiny bit

You could add Feats to any character in the current game with a minor, but not overwhelming, increase in power with a few simple guidelines.

  1. Only allow Feats that don’t have a +1 to an attribute.
  2. Don’t allow the +5/-10 Feats.
  3. Don’t allow Lucky.
  4. Don’t allow Polearm Master
And then I described my idea of connecting a spread of Feats per Background.
