Giving the benefit of the doubt, there's still some issues.
WotC shouldnt be catering to Hardcore Gamers, at least not primarily or any more. They did this with their first few adventures (most of them in 5e being homages to classic adventures to appeal to long time fans).
There are wonderful TTPRGs out there catering to those of us who consider themselves hardcore gamers, but we need a giant casual flagship to draw in new people (oNE OF US ONE OF US) and WotC fills that role. I dont agree with everything they do, but I firmly believe we are all benefiting.
Content creators have a built in audience to reach.
Players can find more games to suit their needs.
DMs have more players than ever (and more chances to show off new games).
I don't think WOTC could afford Iger.I saw somewhere that Disney is bringing back Bob Iger to bring them back. Not sure of Wizards is that far out of touch with their base to go this far.
I can understand that, we all need different things. But just because you need something (or me) doesn't mean the fanbase at large does or that it is a good idea.I dont see how it needs to be all or nothing, or that by providing one thing, additional things cannot also be accounted for.
In short, yes it kind of is needed, for me.
