Some Stories Are True

Astrid stands to her full height and shrugs her shoulders. "I am at a loss for understanding." She asks of everyone and no one in particular, "Do you want to deface this circle to see if it will prevent further incidents like allowing some diabolic creature to arrive here?"

Star Wolfess removes her headband and copies the marks from the circle to it with the black pigment she carries with her, then carefully folds it and puts it into a pocket at her belt. "Maybe someone will be able to decipher the meaning of these signs. At least if they prove to be dangerous, this band can be easily destroyed." she says before resuming her inspection of the standing node and the bloody handprint.

Star Wolfess...
Time seemed to slow in the room, as if the world itself were coming to a halt. It was only an illusion created by all persons in the room turning inward to their own thoughts. More than ample moments had passed for someone to respond to Astrid’s question, but no one had. Astrid asks Oorvid for one of his carving axes so that she could use the butt of it to deface the floor tiles. As she takes the Mhytre’s weapon in hand the one Amiradtha, who had been communicating with the party, waved his hands in an attempted cessation of such action. “Zhdat! Wait! I have not told you all.”

The sudden admission gives pause, and the leader composes himself before continuing. “We have been here for some time. Long enough to hire a Shimadow clan to keep others away and to place twana at the collapsed locations. The accidental summoning came after an unrelated skirmish and confirmed some suspicion that I had of the symbols. That symbol with the bloody handprint is for The Hells. It looks similar enough to the star pattern we can see in the sky at night. The creature that came was a Sprite. I have never seen one but I know of them. They come from one of the Six Hells.”

I do not know all of the star patterns. That one, there, I think is what we call Pandemonium. Some call it The Labyrinth. That is where the dead are sent to Quest. I want nothing to do with that. This one, here, I think is The Seven Heavens. Imagine if we could bring something from there!”

This one, here, I think is The Seven Heavens. Imagine if we could bring something from there!
When Star Wolfess is finally done coping the misterious marks and annalising the bloody handprint, she replies to both Astrid and Amiratha in charge: "Why not put some new tiles all over here to cover both these signs with the standing node? You could hide them without damaging them and in a future you could summond some heavenely being when you learn how to correctely use this device."

Maka still wants nothing to do with even touching the tiles to deface them. He says, "Even trying to deface it might bring the wrath of the Old Ones. We should leave it be."

Wrenn, who is still pondering the matter, says, "I think we should let Astrid try. But only after Oorvid's wounds have healed."

Wrenn: 60 + 43(befriend) + 79 = 182
With the significance of his previous wounds, even though recovery is accelerated, it will take considerable more time before Oorvid is well, Astrid and Wrenn as well. This is obvious to the party members. Having very little knowledge of the Yahdram or their magic, he sides with Maka and the Amiradtha leader to forgo any attempt to deface the tiles. He congratulates Star Wolfess on thinking to copy the symbols for later reference and slings his axes at his hips, ready to depart.

The Amiradtha gives a gesture of peace upon departure and speaks in Shimadow. “Our party will remain here, but we will see what more we may learn before attempting any use of the tiles. Go in peace. Any further encounter with hostile units will not be of our employ. May the Wind blow in your favor but may our paths diverge."

Having solved the mystery of the Chain of Keeps, at least in part, the party is free to return to the Spiofthest village of their residence, inviting and introducing Star Wolfess, fully intending to begin a new adventure after visiting with friends and family for a few days. Having an approximate idea of their current location, the party decides to head westward for the coast then northward along it. A little more than four days are required to make the journey; though as the crow flies, the distance is closer to two.

Right after Star Wolfess enters to the Spiofthest village, she'll ask for the most wise and educated person(s) here, to show them her band with the drawings of the runes from the summoning circle and the cloth that belonged to the Sprite.

Astrid will escort Star to the elderly couple who raised her, since it was the man who had originally discovered her clinging to a piece of the wreckage from her people's ship. He is the village Elder and likely the only one who may have some knowledge of such things. If that proves less than fruitful, she suggests that Oorvid's father, the smith, can also be shown the drawing. Being Orngaddrin and from across the bay, he may have some insight or memory that the Spiofthest would not have.

... Star Wolfess...
Astrid...
The village Elder had some knowledge of a Sprite, but all information about such creatures was more the product of religion or superstition, rather than anything practical. The runes were unknown, though it was suggested that it might be writing from the days of the Yahdram, something the party already knew. Aanfil, Oorvid’s father knew nothing of other worlds or creatures who might inhabit them. Religion for the Orngaddrin and all Mhytres in general was more practical. Of the runes he offered a tiny bit more familiarity than any other. “I am sure that you already suspect those to be markings from the long gone days of the Yahdram. I have seen such markings before. When I was a younger man, before Oorvid was born, I was a prospector not a smith. In the mountains near our village, there, we once came across something similar, carved into smoothed rock around the entrance to a cave. We never entered that cave.”

The only way to cross the bay was to wait for the arrival of a Norikadian ship, but the Norikadians truly believed that women and children could not be carried out of sight of land without a significant blood payment for having such aboard. If sufficient payment were not made to Hvíthákarl, the sea would rebel and wreck the ship. Astrid had no knowledge of this, as the belief system was never explained to her. Her father had simply refused to take her aboard his ship without giving his true reason. After sneaking aboard her father’s vessel as a young child and being the sole survivor of its tragic wreck, perhaps there was something to the belief making more than superstition. There were strange magics and powers in the world far beyond the understanding of nominal men.

This belief had some positive application, in that women and children could not be captured then transported by sea. Having a particularly distasteful ritual for a woman to make a blood payment, passage could be acquired but only for distances shorter than five days. Boys of a certain age had to perform a rigorous rite before being considered men and allowed to sail. In the remainder of the Cycle, nothing further could be learned of the symbols, as no one else, even in other villages of the Windy Coast, had ever come across such.
