I guess I just don't get where the "tabletop" and "game" aspects come into it...

As for the "tabletop", that's mostly distinguishing it from digital or online work - most of the ones I've seen ask you to work in a physical notebook.

Lots of people have their own ideas of what constitutes a "game". One of those is "structured play for entertainment", which fits the bill for journaling RPGs.

Okay, what exactly is a "solo journaling ttrpg"?
Maybe I'm missing something, but that sounds suspiciously like "writing stories"...
If I may, check out my Thousand Year Old Vampire and Colostle actual play threads for examples.

I definitely lean into them being writing prompts, but you don't have to. They are both very much games, as you can see by the number of times the NPCs I like get ganked in the TYOV play-through.

Me: "The rules are just guidelines, the DM is expected to adjust them as needed."
Bob: "Nonsense! If that were true, they would call it a guide instead of a rulebook!"
Me: "Well, it's called The Dungeon Master's Guide for a reason."
Bob:
Me:
Bob: "These rules stink!"
Me: "Don't you mean 'these guidelines' stink?"
