I can't speak to the later seasons of Discovery, as I never got around to watching them, but this season of Picard is the first time in my experience serialized Trek has actually produced a storyline that seemed momentous enough to justify a ten episode treatment.I'm still not a big fan of the, essentially, 10 hour movie format that Picard has adopted. Despite that, I find this season very watchable and above all fun.
It also doesn't suffer the deficiency of needing to completely develop every character within the confines of a grand serialized narrative (certainly not impossible by any means, but compared to Next Gen, which would just have a Data episode or a Worf episode it's trickier). It's not just the nostalgia we have for these characters that makes this season better, it's that it requires only a few lines updating their situation to have them once again function as fully formed characters in the audiences mind.
