D&D (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard

The latest playtest packet for One D&D has just landed, and features five classes (Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard) and the new Weapon Mastery system.

In this new Unearthed Arcana document for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, we explore material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. This playtest document presents the rules on the Weapon Mastery property, updates to weapons, new and revised spells, several new feats, and five classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard. You will also find an updated rules glossary that supercedes the glossary of any previous playtest documents.

Okay, I’ve given a quick skim. I’m coming from a position of someone who (as a player) is mostly familiar with fighters and warlocks.

So far, I’m happy with what I’m seeing. Weapon Mastery looks great, and I’m glad you aren’t locked in to your choice. I’ve got no qualms with the Fighter at this point.

With the Warlock, I’m sure the Spellcasting is going to be contentious. But as someone who is currently playing a Warlock, it’s a welcome change. I have a DM who doesn’t give out a lot of short rests, so I was constantly out of spells. In fact, I basically never planned on using them unless a really good opportunity arose. I’d definitely be willing to take this version for a spin.

I am so excited for weapon properties. Just reading the first page I am very pleased to see the thrown property includes drawing it as part of the attack. My long hoped for Dagger Thrower build might be workable under OneD&D (a build I have been trying to make work without that one rogue subclass that uses magic astral daggers, since 2004.)

And looking at the Nick weapon property and the thrown and light descriptions, yes it looks like you might be able to throw two daggers with one action if you have the Nick mastery, and then take a bonus action (which isn't a second attack using the Light property).

I also see possibilities for a strength based Rogue throwing hand axes (advantage on the second throw).

Bold added. This is something that comes up a lot when discussing the warlock, and I just don’t understand… The DM isn’t the one in control of when the PCs rest. If you want a short rest, just take one.

Modify Spell is amazing. And Create Spell makes researching a tweaked version of an existing spell so much easier!

I don't usually play melee types, but Weapon Mastery does look interesting.

I think the sorcerer is much improved. No real opinion on the warlock.

Oh look, Book of Shadows is now an absolute pain like the other spellcasting has gotten roped into.

At least the Sorc is still a spont caster, if only with profoundly stupid terminology.

Also, Second Wind confirms the 3 encounter work day. Hurray?

If people keep telling me this is backwards compatible with my old warlock I may go nuts
The thing is that your old warlock (with all the old options) still works in the same game alongside a new warlock. The option was not removed. There is just now another kind of warlock, which is effectively no different than a subclass that changes how a class plays.
