"I spent hours prepping an intricate plot for my game and the players ruined my story by making the wrong choices. What do I do?"

Do. Not. Prep. Plots. Or. Stories.
Prepping situations instead of "stories" is faster, easier and results in everyone discovering what the game is about at the actual table.

To this day, I am flabbergasted at where my long-running campaign has gone, just based on the players repeatedly taking the ball and running perpendicular to where I expected them to go. Those are the best stories for all involved, once the DM recovers from the shock.

Exactly. It's so much more fun, rewarding, and engaging all around to play to find out what happens.

These days I might spend an hour prepping, if there's stuff that needs thinking through or whatever--and that's mostly thinking through what is, and why; I don't put much thought at all, ever, into what might come to pass.

Finally have the mental fortitude to go back and read some threads that I had to avoid for a little while.

Advocating for oneself and recognizing that one's own experiences are not universal are not mutually exclusive.

Recognizing that we are all the main characters of our own lives allows us to not sublimate our own egos while still maintaining respect and empathy for others.

Sometimes I worry that I'm barely a character at all. A lot of times I feel more like the camera, or the typewriter...I'm just here to record stuff, make sure it gets written down, don't mind me, I'll be out of your way in a minute.

Oh depression, you rascal.
Have you all ever thought that maybe you're all just figments of my imagination, and I as the narrator I get to choose who the main character is? Because it is true.

I used to spend entire weeks prepping for my gaming sessions. Now I just draw a map and use three random tables (encounters, events, and treasures). I'll improv anything else I need.
I cannot recommend the five minute dungeon creation rules in Grizzled Adventurers enough. The adventures have been completely satisfying and I literally assembled them in the time it took the players to finish filling out their character sheets. I keep waiting for Flatland Games to release the dungeon book they advertised in the back of GA, so that I can have more modules to swap in.
