Just as the question reads. And for the sake of simpleness, we are talking about a PHB, so let's assume they do create some side rule about half-species and different sub-species. So no lightfoot or stout halflings or high, wood, or drow elves. Let's pretend they are one species. How many do you want in the new PHB?

The average in the past has been about 6-8, but with 12 classes, I'd like to see a similar number of races. This would give a huge variety of options right out the gate.

One day, I hope to actually play DnD.
hmmm, well the 5e PHB had 9, but if we're removing individual subspecies i think we want more species to compensate that each one will individually be providing less customisation options, i'm saying 10-12.

my shortlist would be:
human
dwarf
elf
halfling
orc
dragonborn
tiefling
aasimar
warforged
goblin-hobgoblin
goliath
shifter

Personally I would prefer if they went with ancestries and cultures, with multiple properties in each that you could pick a number of, to make your archetype.
That said, I have not hard preference. Teh presence or absence of races is not going to make or break the PHB for me.
