5e was described and talked about as just 'D&D' for years with the edition number tucked quietly away until the community wore them down.

But they talk about it and are right now assuring us that 5.5e is totally 5e, for reals.

5e was never not the fifth edition. It is displayed as prominently (not…) now as it has been for years
Even the playtest was called D&D Next (after having had editions 1, 2, 3, and 4 already), which is a big hint about what version number the next edition will be
To me they are consistent in this being the fifth edition and of them no longer thinking in terms of editions, hence the de-emphasis of the edition and the prominence of the D&D logo
I do expect to eventually get a 6e however…

My 13 year old niece DM’d for the first time on Sunday, with 3.5e because that what I run for our family campaign and she learned from me.
I think it makes sense for her to start a new family campaign from scratch in the next few to 6 months, and 5e is easier and current, so it would make sense.
EXCEPT with 6e on the horizon, 5e becomes a dead end, WHEN becomes important in deciding 3.5e versus 6e for her rookie campaign.
Do I believe 5e and 2024/One/6 will be compatible? Doesn’t matter, because everyone else in her high school next year will be on the latest and think the older stuff is no good. Learning “old 5e“ at this point seems a complete waste of time.

Slightly different set of circumstances, mate. The desire for PF2 remasters has a lot to do with the OGL fiasco, moving PF away from WotC's IPs, and moving PF2 to the new ORC license.
