And at no point did WotC claim that 3E would be evergreen and the final edition.
Thats not what I was getting at, not that it was going to be evergreen only that they were going to use the name Dungeons & Dragons moving forward, and they weren't going to change that, but that was 23 years ago so my recollection may be faulty.
WotC never claimed that 5E, or D&D Next, would be backwards compatible with prior editions of the game. They did claim that they were taking the best parts of earlier editions to craft the new game, but that is something different than "compatibility".
You are correct, I think they said it would be modular and include various parts from prior editions.
Being skeptical of how compatible D&D 5E 2024 will be with D&D 5E 2014 would be reasonable . . . . if we hadn't already seen playtests that clearly show the new version of the game is the same game and not a new edition
I guess we shall see when its finally released.

It's the kobayashi maru: if they don't update the rules, people will ignore the 24 update. If they do update the rules, people will complain it's no longer compatible. If they say the old rules are compatible, people will complain it's not 100% compatible and it invalidates the old stuff. If they say it's a brand new start, people will complain that it's a cash grab and they want to resell you an entire edition's worth of stuff again. And if WotC hadn't announced a refresh, people would complain WotC isn't updating the game and it was getting stale.
100% they could have chose 1 side or the other but instead they are standing in-between and getting attacked from both. I don't know if it would be better to not change race/class/feat to keep it really compatible, or if it is better to redo everything and have it be 6e. I know that I would support either or both but I am not likening this half measure.

I wish someone could explain to me why it matters what they call the new books.
clairity...

imagine tomorrow Mcdonalds made a 'new' big mac that is a single burger on a sourer dough bun with mayo mustard lettuce tomato and pickle.

That MIGHT be a great burger, but calling it a big mac confuses people.

putting out a taste test of that new burger and saying "It's still the big mac just like any other Big mac would make people ask "wait this is a new big mac right?"

It gets worse if you go to your favorite Mc donalds message board to ask about New Big Mac and people insist it isn't new it's the same big mac...

now I am hungry, but I wont go to fast food on a night I don't work.

Are you old enough to remember new coke and coke classic?

I will raise you a 3rd coke...

I just got back from my Honey Moon, and we went to Jamacia. They had Coke made with real suger... here in the states we us corn by product. So in theory there could be 4 really... the new coke made from suger, the new coke made from corn, the classic coke made with suger and the clastic coke made with corn.

I wish someone could explain to me why it matters what they call the new books. For a bunch of hobbyists who love to brag about how they can do it all themselves, I just don't see the point.

It really does not matter if they call it a new edition or not. I'm just so sick of so much online energy being funneled to this absolutely pointless argument.
At one point, there was a brand new thread created with the sole purpose of discussing whether or not OneD&D is a new version, just so that particular topic won't bog down all the other threads. And yet, here we are again . . .

This thread (and other similar new ones) could have easily been posted in that dedicated thread.

Yeah someone tried to tell us not to talk about something when it comes up naturally...

it's not like the old warlord issue where talking about an adventure would make a warlord subthread... this is the amount of compatibility and the amount of change
