D&D (2024) What would change for you if Wizards started calling it 6E?

Nothing, as long as they stay on their current trend.

However, it would be bad for their business, and it's more.like the 20th "edition", at least the 9th typical edition for sure, so it wouldn't make any sense for them to mislabeled another iteration of the game. "2024 version" is accurate and to the point.

I'm curious. From other Forum-goers' perspectives, what would the fallout be if Wizards were to say with the next packet:

"Because of the feedback from a subsection of the Community, we're going to call this 6th Edition. We won't write that on the cover, but the books will be differentiated at a glance with new art. Now this 6th Edition is still pretty much an updated 5th Edition and is backwards compatible with minimal changes, as we've always said, so you can still use all your 5E books."
  1. Would you accept calling it a 6th edition if the changes were close to what have been described and playtested so far?
  2. Would this clarify expectations for the better, or confuse expectations more for the worse for you?
  3. Would this change your plan to support or not support the product?
  4. Would you see Wizards in a better, or worse light?
  5. Would you further consider Wizards to be dishonest, disingenuous, weak to pressure, or admitting to lying compared to their original marketing pitch?
I would be happy if they did that, because it would differentiate it from 5e for purposes of 3pp, which is what I actually care about.

I thought you were moving on to something else. That 5e was not working for you. Or was that just the adventures.
If you have found adventures that you prefer I am curious as to what they are?
I'm contemplating where to move my remaining 5e group.
Currently I am looking at either more rules lite systems (like Castles and Crusades) or a more defined rules system (like PF2). I realize that's a wide gulf, but there's too much crunch and not enough GM support for me to feel comfortable in 5e. (I don't think Level Up or Tales of the Valiant go far enough.)
But I want to get the current game of 5e to a satisfying conclusion. To do that is requiring a lot of tinkering (we're playing Curse of Strahd currently.)
No matter what, I'm still resigned that D&D will remain an inescapable force in the hobby. I don't like the system, yet I'll be required to run it for casual fans and teens (for work).
I just think (IMO) it's not a good system for me. I don't enjoy it, and I loathe the company. I can't look at the books or even the logo without disdain.

I feel you. I hope you find a solution. It's hard to feel stuck in the orbit of something you have so many misgivings about.

Honestly I'd probably be more excited to see what they do, because if they are just going to go to straight-up 6E then it'd signal to me that they aren't worrying about backwards-compatibility and deviate from what 5E was a bit more. Sadly I think we're a bit too late into the process for that to become a reality, even if they made that announcement.

Yeah this.

I'd also appreciate that they were at least on this one item being more honest and transparent, rather than as they have done for years now, just riding the fence to try and appeal to all/offend nobody.

Very little. It would potentially allow them to make some changes that are currently blocked by the need to be compatible, which could be a good thing. (But then, it could also mean they make changes they really shouldn't.)
