Much ink has been spilled as to when the turning point of American politics was that made everything so dramatically partisan, and how the answer is probably unknowable. It isn't. I was there, I saw it happening in real time. And it was the exact moment when certain corners of the political opinion world lost their collective minds over the shift from incandescent to LED light bulbs. Keep your hands off of my light bulbs! they would shout*.

I remember being absolutely perplexed. Oh, to return to those simpler, more naïve times.

*To give you an idea of the scale of rhetoric being used at the time, I imagine that were such drama to unfold today LED light bulbs would be known as "woke" light bulbs.
I'm not endeavoring to argue the point, but there are (or at least were, before the technology improved) people--especially visual artists--for whom the light temperature/color was actually important. But most of the complaints I saw from that direction weren't losing their mind in the same way you're talking about.

There's also the crusty one who constantly insists that "they're comin' to take mah incandescent lightbubs!!" despite you pointing out that he's using an incandescent lightbulb right now, he can still get incandescent lightbubs in stores, and he's free to keep using incandecsent lightbulbs if that's what he wants because, in fact, no one is actually coming to confiscate his precious incandescent lightbulbs.

(Oddly, I literally had this exact conversation with my father just yesterday, except he was irate about real lightbulbs not metaphorical D&D lightbulbs. Apparently this is still a thing to whine about for those of a particular worldview.)
My landlord came to take my incandescent light bulbs, a few years back. Despite being a Boomer, I was ecstatic! Saved me a couple of hundred dollars :)

It's not quite that bad in T:E (although soaking is less effective there), but in spite of the rulebooks going on and on about how corruption is always a choice, the adventures (and Ulisses folks in their youtube videos) love to force corruption tests on players. It's a darn shame, 'cause I love some good horror, but Orrorsh...is just beat-downs. They've got all the tropes, but none of the essence. Such a heartbreaker.

That said, Tharkold is my least favorite cosm by far.
In the old game my characters always tended to come from Aysle, Nile Empire, or.... Tharkold. My Tharkold characters tended to be Human Mutants, with minimal cyber, and a preference for pain weapons. I would generally get my cyber value down to absolute minimums very quickly and not really have to worry about it. Of course our group dice cheat started playing a Technodemon, as soon as the Cosm was released. But, then again, he liked to take whatever character concept I came up with and Munchkin it to the max.

TORG demonstrated to me just how bad my dice rolling is. While playing an Elven Monk, in an adventure in Nippon Tech, we were ambushed in a garage by a bunch of guards with automatic weapons. Everyone else dove for cover. Having a shield, and a truly ungodly dodge number, I went full defence. Disconnected (augmented DEX). Still didn't get hit. After that I proceeded to roll 7 more ones but with full defence and shield, combined with occasional use of Possibilities/Hero Cards, came out completely unscathed. Finished the encounter still disconnected but the rest of the party had cleaned up the guards, while they were all pretty much concentrating on me.

GM ruled that, after that, my shield was two fist sized pieces of wood, held together by a strap.

I wasn't sure whether to hit Love or Wow for that! Amazing.

Minus the possibilities and destiny cards, Torg is one of the swingiest games I've ever played. That base die mechanic is bonkers.

I mean .... maybe the person was being nice? After all, those incandescent bulbs can get HOT!

Definitely. And the cards being used for initiative, with the Standard/Dramatic Scene dichotomy, made for memorable moments. The same Elven Monk nailed a dragon with a roll of something like 85 on the dice, during a Dramatic Scene. The 20s and 10s just kept coming. That never happens to me. The total was over 100, with skill.* Everyone said I was just making up for all my usual rolls.

EDIT - I generally make very skilled characters in TORG, to make up for my inability to roll well ;)

Another Edit - Of course that's not how the skill totals work, but it was a BIG number, with the generated bonus and skill.
