Handwaving per-encounter and per-day abilities is lame. Let's go galaxy-brained with it and handwave combat itself!

DM: "A dragon swoops toward you! Do you run or fight?"
Players: "Fight! Fight!"
DM: "Okay, combat ensues. You fight the vicious dragon for..." (rolls 2d6) "...ten rounds, and then you are victorious!"
Players: "Hooray! We sure kicked that dragon's butt!"
DM: (rolls another dice) "Except for you, Bob. You died gloriously in battle."
Bob, sadly: "Well, at least it was a glorious death."

Well, 99% of D&D 5E combat is a foregone conclusion anyway (spoiler: the PCs always win), so at least it would save time. Or make it a group skill check. That way there’s at least some dice involved. Just describe doing the awesome stuff instead of having to roll round after round to be awesome.

As opposed to other editions of D&D?
Yes! At my table, I run real D&D! I make the PCs reroll all their hit dice every level, so sometimes they have less hp after leveling than when they started! I also have my monsters make clerics a priority target to minimize the PCs healing, and have increased the damage of all weapons. I'm inordinately proud to say I've never had a PC reach past 3rd level! If they did they'd have earned it!

Also, then I'd actually have to crack open my wallet and buy this "Expert Set" I've heard so much about online, but I refuse! I bought the Basic Set because it labeled itself a complete game, and it only goes to 3rd level; if Gary had meant for PCs to get beyond 3rd, he'd surely have put more levels in the game!
