D&D (2024) UA Ranger (Playtest 6)

If they are giving out free spells known, I'd rather take speak with animals which is more iconic, more useful, and is not fighting with Upcasted Hunters Mark for a spell slot.

I didn't say they are arcane.

I said the Conjure Barrage nor Conjure Volley feel Primal nor Iconically Ranger.

They are situational. Rangers are iconically monster hunters. Traditionally of giants and monsters.
Neither spell is a monster killer spell.
Depends on how many and how big. I asset that it kills a lot of little ones.

But aspects that are not part of the base D&D experience should not be core class or race features.
It is not part of your experience. Mine differs greatly from that. Clearing the field from minions, count me in.

People complaining about not deadly enough encounters don't swarm players with enough 15hp minions that deal quite some damage and can grab and shove and help.

Also notice that legendary actions don't require that it is the end of an ENEMY move (if I am not mistaken). So any minion on the field enables the boss.

That is a different thing. I question why they took out Tasha's prim(ev)al knowledge. That felt rangery.

But I guess with everyone being able to cast rituals, the ranger can cast many of those spells for free now.

Which also goes for speak with animals.

Hunter's Mark is +3.5 dmg/turn until lv9. You have access to all of Primal spell list now. You can do better with your concentration slot.

...buuut then you have to worry about losing your concentration, so unless people are also picking up Warcaster, maybe they will just settle for HM + casting some non-concentration Primal spells, now that the Ranger finally gets some.
I am taking a second response, because; one, This does not really address the point of my first post. Which I will admit could have been more clearly made. However, it seems to me now, that some ranger subclasses can use their bonus action every round to add damage to their melee attacks (the Beastmaster and the Horizon Walker) and some that do not have this option.
Though to address your response, I really do not see better spells until second level when Flame Blade and Flaming Sphere become available.
Though the image of a ranger, sneaking through the woods with a 5 foot ball of fire in attendance seems weird to me.

You ever tried to DM that?

A bunch of CR 1/2, 1 or 2 monsters spamming shove and help.

Typically in my experience the DM tries it once, rolls all those dice, then never tried that madness again.

Then they create or snag homebrew minion or swarm rules.

And like you said, the evoker never regrets spamming fireballs. Especially since they have so many. So let them do it.

Heh heh... this is the first time I can remember someone trying to make the case to remove multi-target and Area of Effect abilities from the game.

Usually people want to argue that most warriors should be able to cleave through all enemies adjacent to them (like Whirlwind did). But NOW hitting many enemies at once is bad. Heh... go figure.

Its bad when it costs a rangers most important spell slots and still only kills minor inconveniences.

If Conjure Barrage was a 3rd level spell that deal damage like a 5th level spell, it would be good. Or if Conjure Volley dealt 8th level damage.

Like 9th and 17th level PC Abilities.
