Cookin again

My wife and I went berry picking early this morning. We got several pints of raspberries and blueberries, and some really tasty iced coffee. I decided to make a fast and easy dessert from our plunder: raspberry galette.

Found out that what we call kumara isn't what the Polynesians had when the Europeans arrived

Apparently they're a north American variety that are called yams over there.

The Polynesian kumara was more or less wiped out by blight in the 1950's. A Chinese market gardener donated his disease resistant tubers to the nation free of charge.

Our yams spparently are a Peruvian variety. The original kumara can still be found though it's not the main commercial variety.

This week we went back to old favorite. Changed their menu. Old one was a bit underwhelming. They change every 6 months or so.

I ordered beef brisket nachos. They were amazeballs.

Wife ordered this burger. Sone sort of beef in brioche bun. I thought it was pretty good to much beef for here but still enjoyed it.

Washed down with a decent stout and lager.

Another experimental dish, inspired by stuff I have seen elsewhere:

A sallad made out of chopped cabbage, one thinly peeled carrot, finely chopped red chili. Mix this with a bit of black peppar, add the juice of one squeezed lime, some lights soy sauce, and 1 ripe mango cut in small pieces. Add lots of peanuts. Serve with rice.

edit: The soy sauce was a mistake, and it should have had sugar or honey in it. Maybe served with some meat as well.

Kiwi big breakfast. Option of sausages or black pudding. Guess what I picked.

Kinda amazing the bacon and sausages were great. Wife's quest for a good eggs Benedict was also successful.

One of our favorite places has gotten slow and quality is declining and they took sone favorites off the menu. And put prices up.

Everywhere putting prices up but when your breakfast costs more than steak meal or dinner with two beers......

This place was quicker, cheaper, nicer and better coffee. $10 cheaper and ordered a cheese roll as well.

Due to roadworks a pain to get to and very student vibe though. Furniture was table were very small not as comfortable.

Went to my local Burmese place for dinner tonight. I’m working my way through their menu- no duds so far! Tonight, I had their Mandalay Pork Curry.

And that may be the next dish I bring home from them for takeout to share. The chunks of pork were spoon tender. The curry sauce was mild but very well seasoned. All in all, a great gateway dish. (Mom has eaten there with me before, but some of the dishes are too spicy for her now, and Dad hasn’t had a taste yet.)

Been talking to the oldest son in the family that owns the place about cooking. I’ve given him some pointers that have helped him out. I always ask how he’s doing learning to cook like his mom does (she’s the main cook), but he’s more into grilling. Mostly Texas/creole sty stuff, as it happens. 😁

Tonight, I suggested he take some of the Burmese spice mixes and try using them in a marinade or dry rub for his grilling. He hadn’t thought of that, yet, but I bet he would’ve.

Burmese? Adding that to my jealousy list.

Burmese food is an absolute joy. We hadn't tried it until we moved to SF, and we were missing out (in our defense, Boston didn't have a ton of Burmese restaurants -- looking now at Yelp, the only place I'm finding is in Allston along with a smattering of Thai and Vietnamese places; not sure if this because Yelp is lousy for searches or if there's just no Burmese food).

I went to an Ethiopian restaurant years ago and really enjoyed the food (in the U.S.). I've never been able to find anther one, and every time I've mentioned it to someone, they inevitably make a joke about the food in the context of the famine from years ago.
